According to articles in the Post and the WSJ, he had signed documents at the time acknowledging his responsibility to pay.  And then he didn't.  He also filed with the IMF for the 50% that they are supposed to contribute to this tax, and signed acknowledgement of receipt of that contribution. Then he kept it.

This from someone who used to work at Treasury, and wants to work there again.  Where does he think they get their money ?

There is a class of privileged people, very common in NYC and DC, who do not believe that regulations apply to them.  Right now it looks like Geithner is one of them.  I hope I am wrong, and that the articles missed something, but so far I'm thinking I wouldn't lend this guy a quarter for a cup of coffee.

So. . . he took the money from the IMF to pay his taxes, then he (oops) forgot to pay those taxes which nets him a nice. . . 52K?  Nice.  I wish my "mistakes" were so profitable.

I'm not defending Geithner as a choice. I've no idea how good he'll be at Treasury, if he gets there. I'm generally pretty cynical about Wall Street, though, and think it is one big casino and that anyone involved in it beyond a certain level has probably long ago sold off whatever soul he or she may have once had (except for pry, of course, who retains a soul of great depth and beauty).

Dollje, you are right about Wall Street, but alas, I sold my soul a long time ago.

Barack is simply a puppethead figure allowing for the continuation of Bush era policies. And both answer to powers beyond the law:

Don't hold your breath.  After the MN Supreme Court issues a ruling in Franken's favor - probably this Thursday - Coleman has the option of asking the US Supreme Court "circuit justice" for Minnesota for a stay.  Since this circuit justice is Alito, I expect the stay to be granted, perhaps with a demand that the count be done again by people in whatever the official garb for ballot counters was when the Constitution was written. - DvF
