I'm moving to Oz in a few months.  Anyone else out there whose done the same?  My job will be temporary (2-4 years) so I won't be bringing everything I own.  I'll store (or sell) furniture in the US and then bring clothes, books, etc. with me.

Any tips on what to ship?  How about my trip down?  Is it wise to bring more than 2 suitcases (and pay for extra baggage)?  I imagine folks who've moved to Europe might have had similiar experiences.  All advice appreciated.

Been there, done that. Twice.  Ship your clothes and carry your computer (if possible). Don't bring more than  you can haul on the plane in your two suitcases since you'll just have to haul it back.  Be sure to get a good idea of the type of weather in the part of Oz that you are going to live.  It can vary pretty widely and take the clothes that are appropriate. Clothes can be a bit expensive in Oz.

when I moved to the UK I was going to put my stuff in storage and only take clothes and such. I found out it was cheaper to actually ship it to the UK than to put it in storage for 2 years.

Expatinuk,

Did you pay for a container?  And are you going to return to the U.S.?  I'm planning to return in a few years and I'm not sure it's cost-effective to ship all my things there if I'm going to turn around and have to ship them all back...

Shipping to Au will be much more expensive than to UK.

I ended up staying in the UK. Yes, I got an entire container. Check out the prices of the container, the loading AND unloading of the container and the transport costs. Then check out the price of putting your stuff in storage including the insurance costs and the costs of transporting the stuff to the storage and the cost of transport to get your stuff shipped to you when you return.

I found that it was going to cost me about the same (and I was looking at a 2 year period in the UK). I also calculated the cost of replacing things in the UK that I had in storage in the US.

You HAVE to look at all costs and not just the initial... oh, it's going to cost $3000 to ship your stuff.

The long and short of it, besides the fact that I ended up staying in the UK, was that I had all my stuff with me... and felt like I was 'at home'
