I think an atmosphere where one does not waste time “fighting” makes up for a lot.

Bingo!

I am in my first year of TT and have a 4/4 load and I have found time to publish.  I have a book contract that is based on my diss.  I was able to delay the contract for a year for me to clean it up.  In my first year, here I have able to produce 4 book chapters and articles that are under review/forthcoming.  The three things that help me are: 1) I get to teach a class or two or semester that is part of my research agenda.  I get inspired by the class and the literature to keep up with things and have a voice in  the conversation; 2) I have a couple of classes that I will be on continual rotation for (i.e. I have become responsible for teaching out intro to theory course).  Although, things change every semester, a good deal of the material I use stays the same; 3) I think having a clear research agenda helps.  Most of the projects I do now are based on my dissertation or some theoretical literature I become interested in and familiar with in graduate school.  I simply build on a lot of the material that I know about and try to extend the theoretical conversation.  Having a clear idea of where you want to have a voice in the literature can really help you develop good ideas and doing research.
