This deserves its own thread. I feel as if I am throwing a scrap of bloody meat to a bunch of dogs. In the traditional sense, as I know it, the definition for elite thinkers and scientists never included "white male". Although, it is true that an encyclopaedia will immediately show that scientists, painters, etc. were by 99% white males. The problem is that you are trying to make impression that "whiteness" and "maleness" were the criteria for either putting them into encyclopaedia or judging their achievements or both. There were four women painters (Gentillesci, Carriera, Vigee-Librain and Kaufman, spelling not guaranteed), or may be ten; do you think it was just a discrimination or you will admit women have practically no talent in painting?
Oh, and this is the beginning of the next paragraph: I am the last person who will try to discriminate. When I speak of these matters, I feel pain thinking that a woman can be upset hearing my bold statements. But, see this, please: I did a honest and good work in science, why should I lie and fabricate facts when talking about social matters? Go! VP

Well, to be honest, a woman artist with any sort of "endowment" would have trouble doing this since some of her round parts would get in the way. But perhaps the round parts have some benefit in providing a different perspective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRVts7TFw-YPS. I found this when going to you tube to look up skinny colorful happy people. I'll let you know if I find any.

You know, psychnov might not be Borat, he might be Borat's fat companion who ate the dancing bear. Sounds about right. OR, he could be a member of the lurkiate whose day job is running the "help the Nigerian Prince" email scam? The level of erudition and arguementation is about right for either.

Since I personally know a number of brilliant (nonfamous) women painters... I find this nuts.

It just keeps getting better and better over there on that other thread: Now, what I do say is that women are in smaller numbers at the high-achievers' end of the curve than men. The cause of it might be partially in the facts of social life, but I have no doubt that a larger part of it is genetics. Probably, hormonal causes. Probably, comparing with men, deficiency in the ability to concentrate, and for longer times; probably, connected to hormonal stresses. Who wants him? Francie? CBL? Fiona? Come on, someone's gotta take the first swing. I'd send in Igor, but a) he's otherwise involved in Anthroid's plagiarist luau and b) he actually might be able to out-think this poster, which would frighten me no end. VP

Pyshnov's comments about women painters (let's add a few more--once the social strictures more or less came down, there are lots, such as Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O'Keeffe, etc.), demonstrate, once again, why one shouldn't opine on things one knows zilch about. Of course, he's good for that demonstration.
(My wife taught feminist art history for years--very eye-opening).
It's kind of like saying there haven't been any great women blacksmiths--if the guild is controlled by men, in a blatantly sexist society, and access to the profession is tightly restricted, it's just really not surprising that many women who might well have turned out to be great painters didn't even think about it.
Oh, and he left off Sophonisba Anguissola and Josefa de Obidos (I'm not sure I have her name right).
Sigh.

Tra-la-la! aandsdean: (My wife taught feminist art history for years--very eye-opening). You can open a Coke bottle on a feminist lecture, provided it's fresh, gives the right sound. Try to open your eyes in a museum.

I watched a special on PBS a few years ago about female athletes. Apparently, the first woman to run a marathon put in a fake name, strapped herself down, and pretended to be a male. You see, women were not allowed to run marathons. At the time, Drs were telling women that running a marathon would render them infertile. "Experts" argued that women were unable to run marathons because they were just not capable of that type of endurance (Obviously, these men had no idea that endurance is involved in 36 hour labor, or even 6 hour labor, but that is another story).
This woman ran the marathon because she believed she could do it and wanted to prove the experts were wrong. When she ran it, she believed she was giving up her chance to become a mother. She believed that running this running would make her infertile.
In the interview, she reported being very surprised when she was pregnant a year or so later.
Sometimes, people believe women can't do something because they have never seen a woman do it.
Images and role models are powerful.
