She cannot take the course a third time. This means that she is out of the program, as the class was a required one for the major. I had argued to the University academic integrity committee (well, through paperwork; I never actually spoke to anyone there) that the chance to take a course for a third time--which is allowed only under very unusual circumstances--would reward plagiarism and that the grade of F should stand, and she shouldn't be allowed to take it again. I read the committee's decision--that she can't take it for a third time--to also prohibit any chance to transfer an equivalent course in (and, anyway, as chair I judge what's equivalent and what's not!) from another institution. That would be trying to take--or substitute in--a course for the third time, which she has agreed not to do. So she's out, whether she's officially kicked out or not (and she was hoping to graduate this fall). This is a very, very good thing. Yeah, I have the question? Can she do anything else to continue her college career or not? (Please say no!)
My understanding is that Precious Snotleigh, because she can no longer take the required course, has been booted from the program that Sr. Mary Queen Anthroid directs. However, Precious Snotleigh has not been removed from the university. So, at least Precious Snotleigh is no longer a thorn in the ass of the two people who held her to acceptable academic standards. . Right. And I wonder if I'll be getting any questions...though I guess under FERPA I couldn't actually answer them without her permission.

I'm grading long reports for a junior-level technical writing class. I've done four so far. Two of them were plagiarized--one just a straightforward copying of a journal article (including visuals and works cited page) and the other is a paste-together of a variety of sources (including Pat Buchanan's campaign web site).
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. I'm hoping I just happened to hit the only two cheaters in the stack one right after the other--but I'm not optimistic about that being the case.

Now I'm up to 11 papers graded, and 5 plagiarists. The most recent one was about the Ethics of Journalism. It's a very close paraphrase of the Wikipedia article on that subject.

HOOHAHEE This sure puts the tirade on the last reflexive essay in perspective. Still don't like them taking half of the final essay to tell me what they knew before they came into my class. I don't care about what Granny says on the subject and even you admit she might be a little biased!! (Still giggling about plagiarizing ethics)

Anthroid, I've been following this thread, and I sympathize in particular with the lies told about you. You were scrupulously prepared, having spent (wasted?) hours of time and experienced way too much anxiety, and you were met with shrill, self-absorbed personal attacks. This made me shudder with full-body memories.
I caught two cheaters, documented it, got approved all the way up the chain of command to take them before the "Panel." Did not *really* get that the "Panel" was comprised entirely of *students.* I knew this, but didn't think it would mean that no responsible adults would be in the room for the hearing. During the hearing, the cheaters told the student Panel: "She's a professional actress, don't believe a word she says, she lies all the time." (I teach in Theatre.) Did I mention that the Panel was dressed pretty uniformly in tank tops and flip flops?
Findings of the Panel? Students got off because I had not expressly said that their work on the final blue book exam taken during exam period while being proctored had to be each individual's work alone.
WHAT?!?!?!?!?!
After-effects? My Chair vowed never to refer cheating up the chain again. Period.

There is something just so WRONG about a panel made entirely of students. Students who, apparently, took the position for the sole purpose of figuring out ways to get their compatriots off.

Yeah... uh, did you accidentally step into a reality TV show or something? I have never heard of anything like this. Where are you, MTVU?
And sorry you had this experience. Yuck.

Crazy story, I know, about the student Panel.
No, not MTVU, although I did wonder at moments if I was being "punk'd."
No, try a Major Private University in a Major Northeastern City.
Brrrrrr, gives me shivers to think about it! Luckily, my great experiences with students keep outweighing these horror stories.
Oh, and--I've found a new school to call home!
Again, best wishes to Anthroid and anyone else with Post Plagiarism Stress Disorder.

As the dearly departed and much missed Mr. Vonnegut often wrote: "So it goes." Good gods, what do you do. I, too, have uncovered plagiarism yet again, and this on the final papers after busting the little darlings all semester long and admonishing the entire class about the perils and sin of plagiarizing, and "so it goes." There must be a draconian policy in effect before the "squooshy" dear-hearts will ever take us seriously regarding the "plague," if you will. As I've noted before, calling this a teaching moment will not diminish their ardor for cutting corners and thieving off of wikipedia, 123cheat.com or any of the myriad resources at their fingertips.
I found today that one student today cut and paste an entire research paper from the internet without documenting any sources or even referencing any, yet the dimly lit-bulb included a works cited page with the websites listed. I know, I know . . . sweetums must've been confused and didn't realize that she/he/hu was plagiarizing. Sorry, I don't buy it.
The only excuse in this case, and I say it is the only excuse because I painstakingly explained what plagiarism is time and time again all damn semester long, is that snookums is just plain stupid.
Thankfully, I am done with this whole game after May 10th.
Bless you all and good luck in battle.
