Hi Chronicle Readers,

I have a huge and rather vague favor to ask. In the last year or so, I read an article (and I'm pretty sure it was a Chronicle column) that discussed the disconnect between professors' and students' values of education. The point I remember most is the writer stating that professors are those who greatly value learning to the extreme while our students tend to merely see education as a means to an end. The writer was arguing that the reason professors feel their students do not meet their expectations is because their sense of learning and education is very far removed from most "normal" people, i.e. students. In other words, academics devote their lives to writing, thinking, reading, researching, and our students will never meet professors' standards because they do not value these things as highly.

Does this brief description ring a bell with anyone? I'm desperately trying to track down this article and am drawing a complete blank.

Thanks for any help you can off.

Your description made me think of Thomas H. Benton's articles on "The 7 Deadly Sins of Students"
http://chronicle.com/jobs/news/2006/04/2006041401c/careers.html

and "A Tough-Love Manifesto for Professors"

He certainly talks about student expectations vs. professorial expectations in both.

Thanks for the suggestions, goldenapple. These articles aren't exactly the one I remember, but I do think they will be helpful. Thanks again.
