This is why I kept all my miles with United...although they also jacked up the minimum free ticket to 25K, with the real seats available at 50k.
But....I had to go to a funeral on the West Coast recently, with about four days' notice. Tried to redeem a freebie on USAir, and got all kinds of smack about how I had already used the ticket (denied boarding compensation), the ticket number invalid, blah blah. Got that fixed by the fabulous USAir agents at my airport, and extended by six months my free ticket deadline. Bonus! Meanwhile, I only had about 43k left on UA's freq flyer program, but they were able to give me a 25k seat in Economy Plus (nice--all the flying eventually sort of pays off). They were very nice, the process was very easy (had to pay $80 for the rush ticket, tho) and it all worked out quite well. Verdict--fly Star Alliance, but keep UA's program, and forget about the paltry <5k miles at US Airways.

I don't live in a hot area for either US Air or UA, so I imagine I'll be finding other ways to spend those 20K miles I have.
Today I received an e-mail from US Air "suggesting" I vote for their frequent flyer program as the "best in the business" (some kind of award that shouldn't exist, I gather).
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....
