Hello All--

I just learned via my local newspaper that after January 31, Dividend Miles members who have not had account activity (earning or redeeming) for the past 18 months will forfeit whatever miles are in their account. One of their cost-cutting measures, I gather (and I suppose not sending me a notice was a cost-cutting measure as well, ahem).

On a related topic, I heard that the CEO of US Airways just testified on Capitol Hill about the proposed hostile takeover of Delta. Any airline junkies see it?

Re preserving Dividend Miles: you can do so just by buying something on the site. You don't have to fly. I bought a kitchen timer from one of the businesses affiliated with (via icon) on the site, and that preserves the miles. Cool timer, too.

almost all of the airline ff programs have an affiliation with a flower company. I just send flowers to my mother etc and use the different airline programs for it.

Use those miles, folks.  The Big Sick Six airlines have been slashing awards as part of their general incompetence and cost-cutting.  Most jacked up award travel from 20K to 25K in the last 6-18 months, and they're also cutting back sharply on the number of available award seats.  Use them lest ye lose them.

But I like the flower idea a lot.

I just love these boards!

You just saved me 13K miles. Thank you.

I didn't buy flowers, I bought myself a new lamp from homedepot. It was even on clearance with free shipping. Also, I earned miles with the purchase. I like knowing that I can do this.

Thanks for this post.

I am irritated that they can take away miles that I have earned.

The airlines are all in financial trouble and the government keeps bailing them out. I think we should let them go out of business. Some other company will come along and fly airplanes. ;)

Ha--as an unemployed person, it didn't occur to me to actually BUY something in order to keep the miles--though, if buying anyway, why not?

I would have lost 20K miles, which of course USED to be enough for a flight, but no more; would have been nice, as I'm trying to get to my nat'l conference but seriously hesitating to spend the thousand bucks out of savings to do so.

I restored my good graces with US Airways by "joining" the points.com website (you can swap miles, hotel points, etc. there), and getting their signing bonus of 10 Dividend Miles. No cost for this.

Yeah, this policy has been in place with US Air for close to a year now.  They sent out an email to dividend miles members a long time ago, but I know that I found mine in the spam folder and wouldn't have read it were it not for the fact that I had a ticket with them and thought the email might be about my reservation.

Yes, remembering login info IS an issue for this airline, as they have been converting to a standard username/password format online, while still asking for the account number and PIN over the phone.

Has anyone tried to redeem miles for an actual flight lately? One hears that this has become increasingly difficult as they (and all airlines) are trying to fly with full airplanes.

Yes, I've done it, but depending on when you want to travel, you need to book way, way in advance.  I used miles from my trip to MLA this year, and I booked the ticket almost a year in advance.  Even then I had to book a first-class ticket for 50K miles.

But if you want to use them for regular (read: not the holidays) times, it's not so bad, and you can book tickets with many airlines on their websites instead of having to call the agents.

By the way, US Air is part of what they call the stearfleet alliance which means tht you can used you flights on those airlines for US Air dividend miles (or vice versa).  I used a United ticket to get US Air miles this fall, and that gives me 18 more months.

Finally, just saw in the paper that UNITED has implemented the same 18mo. policy, so heads up on that one.

Okay, so I had to get a customer rep on the phone, and I finally got to my account. He also said that the only things that you can redeem with the miles were magazines through magsformiles.com or travel through usair.

Where can I find the links to the other services that you can use your miles for?

frazali--
I did not find much help on the airline site (they tell you oodles of ways to EARN not SPEND miles with other companies); but see fiona's post above. She said she was able to go to corporate links on the airline site and was able to buy something on those linked sites.

If you are just wanting to activate your account and not lose miles, try going to points.com and when you register (pretty painless) you get the signing bonus of 10 free miles on the program of your choice; mine registered with Dividend Miles within a couple days, so you may still have time before the deadline. This is a plus because many times when you redeem/earn miles there is a disclaimer that you should allow 6 weeks for it to appear on your account.

Points.com is a clearinghouse for doing things like swapping for amazon.com gift certificates, etc. You end up losing something like 80% of the original redemption value of the miles--but it's better than losing them completely.

Good luck!

Or, go to http://www.usairways.com/awa/content/dividendmiles/earnmiles/default.aspx

and click on any of those links.

You can buy anything from the stores at http://www.skymall.com/usairwaysmilesmall/homepage.htm and earn miles. At this point, you will have to tell them you bought something because they might not know in time to save the miles. I used the live chat feature to give them my confirmation/order number from home depot.

Hurry! You are running out of time to keep the miles you already earned.

Here's a link to an article than ran in Today's USA Today re: frequent flier miles and various policies:

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but thanks for all of the tips! I registered with points.com - hopefully in time.
