In my dept, faculty who do not meet with candidates are disqualified from voting on appointments.

Heck, I had an on-campus interview for a position at my alma mater, in a different department. Strangely enough my graduate adviser was on the search committee. Even stranger, he was absent for my entire interview (apologized and said he had other commitments elsewhere). I think if my *adviser*, who was on the SC, was absent for the entire interview, it must not be unusual for lots of people to miss all parts of the interview.

Well, you'd obviously already impressed the dickens out of him, so he didn't need to see your interview.  (Did you get an offer?)
