For visiting assistant professor positions, do SCs usually just do phone interviews or do they also do campus visits, complete with job talks and such? I'm in humanities.

Really depends. (1) Sometimes one phone interview is enough. (2) Sometimes one convention interview should be followed by a campus visit.
(2) happens to schools of various ranking status.

In my experience, visiting positions that get advertised in the spring generally do a phone interview (after asking for writing samples, etc.) and then make a decision. There's only so much damage you can do in a year!

But I noticed as early as 3 years ago some 1-year VAP searches already required campus visits. (especially SLACs, requesting teaching demos)

As far as I know, campus interviews are the norm even for visitor slots in music; I did a half-day interview (including performance) for a one-year, part time job. Maybe it has to do with how crowded the field is?

Until I found these boards I assumed VAP positions required campus visits (I'm in history). I held a VAP last year which involved one and was invited to campus at another.
It was a *great* VAP, btw. Same salary, teaching load, benefits, professional development funds, conference travel, etc -- same as an incoming assistant professor. The salary also was negotiable. Oh, and $5,000 for relocation expenses. And no service requirements. And extremely collegial to boot.

Angel: That is a great VP position. Congratulations and good on the institution for offering it.
When my very cheap school decided on a VAP position two years ago I was shocked that the dean did indeed require campus visits of all our finalists with the full dog and pony show for each. And we prepay all expenses.

We'd do a campus visit for someone to cover an upper-level schedule (and that would almost certainly be a one-year-only VAP) but for the people teaching freshman comp, an application, writing sample, and phone call are enough (even though they can be renewed up to five years -- AFTER we've seen them teach for a semester). Yeah, it sounds illogical, but we figure everyone who's taught comp several times as a grad student can probably handle it, and anyway, we can get rid of them after one year if they can't, AND we're hiring them by the handful every year, so it would be darned expensive to ask for fly-in money. But if someone is going to teach a specialized field to advanced majors and maybe cover a grad seminar too: that person we need to see.
