I have been consulting the CHE forums since mid-December and have found them extremely helpful.  I'm currently in the awful position of checking my email constantly and making sure that my phone is fully charged ALL THE TIME.  What makes this period so much worse is that 1) it's my first time, and 2) I only had one MLA interview even though it was at a Dream U.  Has any of you been in this situation?  Do you have any general advice for me?

Relax... keep in mind that you only need 1 job offer to get a job. But don't put all your hopes into getting that DREAM job. Keep your options open, keep applying for jobs. And make sure you exercise on a regular basis.

Hey, that's my line! Go to the gym! It's 6:00 a.m. and I'm headed there now. If I see you, we won't discuss your worries. We'll crank the treadmill up and have a sweat.

I've been in exactly that situation.  My first year on the market I had one interview, and it was with a major research university.  I was in heaven.  I thought I did a killer interview, and I was convinced I'd hear from them for a campus visit.  Turns out, I did do a killer interview - one that was so bad it killed my chances of ever hearing from them.

The good news is that subsequent years have yielded far more interviews and that my idea of a "Dream U" has changed significantly.

The bad news is that I'm still in the awful position of checking my email constantly and making sure that my phone is fully charged ALL THE TIME.

I've always noticed that academics are surprisingly big on the physical upkeep.  I've been meaning to anyway, but I decided to go for a run today after seeing your responses--I feel great!

trabb, the idea of a misconceived "killer" interview had me laughing and wincing.  How did you find out that it wasn't the right kind of killer interview?  Is it something you figured out on your own?

I'm realizing how naive it is to call any place "Dream U."  At least I didn't say "dreamy" or "dreamboat"...

Mm, being your 1st time is sweet but not "worse."
Many job-seekers here have had their 1st time, 2nd time, n-th time, but they are not less vulnerable than the 1st-timers...
