I searched before posting and am sorry if this has been asked again and again and I missed it.

Is a thank you email appropriate following a phone interview or is it best to leave the next contact to the search committee?

Thank you!

My sense is that a phone interview is like any other preliminary interview (MLA, AHA, etc.) and that it therefore would not be inappropriate to send a brief e-mail of thanks to the SC chair.

Sure, why not?  Two (rather short) sentences maximum, though.

Good luck!

Of course, send a thank you note. Phone interview is not different from a conference interview in this respect.

I send a thank you to the principle speaker - usually but not always the SCC.

I don't email the other people, although I don't always catch all of their names anyway.

I must admit, the thought also occurred to me after a phone interview, but I decided against it. I think sending a note now could come across as desperate at the worst and overly excited at the least. I'd save it for later, after a campus interview, rather than a preliminary one. Wait for them to contact you first. You probably already thanked them on the phone anyway. If you do send a note, I'd make sure it only went to the chair.

I sent a brief email to the SC chair after a recent phone interview.  I didn't get a reply to the thanks, but I did get a campus invite.  If you phrase it professionally and appropriately, there's no reason why it should appear desperate.  In fact, you are showing your continued interest in the position.

I sent a brief note to the chair of the SC (one or two sentences tops), and asked hu to forward my apreciation to the rest of the SC.  It wasn't necessary, but I figured I would appreciate it if the shoe was on the other foot.  If you are short and to the point, I don't think it needs to come across as fawning or desperate.  if you are effusive in your praises and the email is three pages long, well, that's another story. . .

good luck!

Having served on many many search committees, I too vote for the two-sentence thanks to the search or department chair, who will forward it to the rest of the committee. Remember that all interviews are interviews *by both sides* -- a "thank you" says to us that even after we've disclosed some of the difficulties here and been unable to keep the biggest jerk in the department (who is, alas, in your field) from saying something outrageous, you're still interested in the job.

This is not to say that failure to send a brief "thank you" will count against you, but that sending it makes us feel good about you when we narrow to the interview list. Which is why e-mail (fast) is best. And fulsomeness is not so good.

I have to admit that while I am pro-thank you, it was not my practice to send thank-you e-mails for phone interviews.  I got plenty of interviews, but it may have counted against me once or twice for all I know.  A brief e-mail to say thanks I'm still very interested is probably a good idea.
