Writing sample for campus visit?

Hi. Are candidates usually asked to submit another writing sample (in addition to the one sent with the application) before a campus visit?

Mostly not, but it does happen. I've been asked to submit the entire book/dissertation after the first writing sample and know of other places that also ask this of candidates before they decide on who to bring to campus. I'm in an MLA field by the way.

I was asked for a copy of my dissertation once when I was on an on campus interview. Fortunately, I had burned nearly everything I'd ever written on a disc just in case of such a request. I'd suggest you either burn a disc or bring a flash drive with your writings and vita just in case anyone asks you for anything. You can always ask them to print it for you, especially if they gave you no warning they'd be asking for it.

I agree with jrscholar. I've had several campus interviews where faculty (typically faculty who weren't on the SC or at the preliminary interview but who were interested in the hire) asked to see syllabi, articles, etc. I usually take a portfolio with a copy or two of anything that might be relevant, and/or e-mail copies of anything that might be useful to myself for easy access as needed.
(The e-mailing-to-oneself gambit also works really well for those odd occasions when one realizes fifteen minutes before one's job talk or conference appearance that one has somehow left one's paper & notes back at the [somewhat distant] hotel....)

I'm in the somewhat curious position of having a campus interview scheduled in a couple of weeks, and A) The SC has never asked for a writing sample and B) they didn't indicate that I should bring one to the campus interview. I'm in the humanities, so our writing is pretty important. Should I just expect they will want one and bring it?
I'm afraid to ask the SCC because I'm afraid of them saying "Sure, give us all of the dissertation you have so far!" when some of it is not ready for "public viewing" if you will....
advice?

You can either ask in advance--I would--or you could simply bring materials (that you are comfortable with) to the campus interview, just in case you're asked or the right moment comes up for you to offer.
I have to agree that this sounds strange. I've never heard of a job search in the humanities reaching this stage without candidates being asked for a writing sample of some kind.
