Some help earlier when I was sending things to them and asking questions would have been nice.
Apparently my chapters have come in over an entire year, so it's hard to remember what I've said before(actually, I sent the first three chapters for review in November). Things jump around and the purpose is unclear. At least he said good luck on my revisions. Now I'm supposed to draw up a flow diagram outlining my research methodology and methods. I'm feeling very frustrated right now.
I wish the two of them could at least agree on the things that I need to do for them.

I'm having a similar issue right now. It's related to research that may or may not wind up in the diss. We have lots of co-authors. The other team made some big-sounding promises and claims about what they were getting done without our input - to the extent that we assumed they were progressing on a whole other track without us. Fine.

Today I get an e-mail from disorganized crazy lady in charge of the whole deal. She wants to call a meeting to make sure to clear up "misunderstandings" that are arising from their "not getting things from us".

Here's the thing. I've been sending them things all along.

News flash: PEOPLE DON'T READ WHAT YOU SEND THEM. AND THEN THEY BLAME THE LOWEST ONE ON THE TOTEM POLE WHEN THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON!!!! Agh. This is a whole new twist on "why grad school sucks".

One of my favorite methods for dealing with Fearsome Editor Creatures is to thank them for their ideas. I then go change a few sentences early on, and give it back to them. They almost never realise I made almost no changes. Of course, it is crucial not to leave an earlier draft with them.

I like the way you think. I was actually contemplating doing something along those lines. My Fearsome Editor has a tendency to forget what hu (did I use that right???) says from week to week. I could simply cross my fingers and hope that hu doesn't notice.

I got my proposal revision in last week -- it was very late.  If my advisor likes it, I get to send it on to the rest of the committee, one of whom never gave me feedback on the first draft.

Meanwhile, I have an article to finish that I promised to get in soon and will begin teaching again in the next couple of weeks.  The money will be nice, and I'd like to think having to meet a schedule will help my procrastination issues.

I was invited to give a guest lecture at a class at a local university which was cool -- although they haven't paid me yet! -- and that could lead to more of that sort of thing.  They liked me and I might be able to fill a niche for them.

I am feeling less like a fraud today than, say, a couple of weeks ago...

Great work dolljepopp!

And thanks to everyone for the supportive words. I guess I need to take them into account, but one thing that graduate supervisors should be taught is the best way to give feedback. Not making it personal is a good start!

I'm having trouble with procrastination issues, and I notice that merce is having the same over on the PA thread. Anyone have suggestions for improving focus?

Keep going, merce! You can do it!!! You ARE doing it!

No pressure or anything, but you are my hero. I need to you finish by Sunday so I can take heart and finish my own darn dissertation in two months' time.

Wow! This came just in the nick of time.
I was about to call it a day and go to bed though it is still early to me and I haven't done a darned thing on my BdV (not to be confused with BVDs unless you like that sorta thing) chapter.
Fine.
I'll give it another hour and then I'll go defeated to hide under the covers and cry til dawn.

Good morning Merce!

Today I woke up determined to tackle chapter 2 of my dissertation. Hope you are similarly inspired about your BdV.

Remember: we are ALL rooting for you!!!
