What forms of non-financial compensation do your department chairs receive?

A large office, a parking spot, and a bigger desk--though he may have bought that himself. Damn little for all the aggravation.

In larger departments, some load credit.  In smaller departments, nothing.

The MLA has done a study on it. Go to www.adfl.org and check it out in the Bulletin they publish for foreign language chairs.

Power or the perception of such.

In fact, many receive some financial compensation in addition to release time.  The compensation might be as little as $50 per month but could be much more.

Back in my chair days, I eventually got about 1.5 -2 months salary and reduction to a 2/2 load (our institution has a normal 4/4 load)

2/2 load, financial compensation, and a better office.

£4000 per year and less teaching. Not worth it, IMHO.

2/2 load (but that hasn't happened in ten years), stipend, larger office with secretary (a must), summer school (We hold a lot of orientations during the summer, so it's necessary in order to enroll students properly)

Here it is a one course reduction (to a 2/2 load), about $3000 during the academic year, another $3000 for the summer and a guaranteed summer course, which is worth about $4000. So, you end up with a 2/2/1 load rather than a 3/3 load, get paid about $10k, and work about 10k more hours a year.... no thanks!
