I am trying to gather some student affairs/ development related questions for a number of positions.  Will you please add some questions you may have or some that you have come across or ones that you may ask that reach deeper than what is on the resume?

The questions you are looking for can be very particular to the positions. If you can identify the positions, I think we'll all be able to assist you further!

Specifically Hall Director positions, but generally if we could discuss questions that would be best for hands on with students, dealing with issues and non-academic....

Please give examples of what interpersonal skills you can teach.

Tell me about your experience with educational/developmental sanctions.

What specific types of diversity do you seek when hiring your paraprofessional staff?

Tell me about your experience working with support staff such as clerical workers, food service workers, and custodians.

How do you work with helicopter parents?

Please give me an example of a time you provided value added or went beyond the usual response when working with a student, parent or staff member, and tell me what about the situation caused you to do so.

How do you determine the training needs of your paraprofessional staff members?

What has been your experience working with FERPA issues?

How has the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act affected your work with students?

I've interviewed quite a few housing professionals over the years and usually fall back on these old favorites:

  • Please describe your advising style.
  • What is your supervisory style?
  • Tell me/us about a time when you mentored one of your students through a difficult personal situation.
  • Tell me/us about a time when you mentored one of your RAs through a difficult situation in the hall.
  • What judicial/disciplinary model do you use?
  • What do you think are some of the biggest needs of our residential students at ABC SLAC or XYZ State U?

Hope these help!
