Well, there's one supposed eyewitness who offers up that the man was mouthing off.  And another person who cites the police report that the man tried to walk away during a citation.  And another person who suggests that this guy is known for having an attitude.  And others who noticed people being cited, but not arrested.

Sounds like a self-important prig thought he was above the law, copped an attitude with the police, treated them like the laws didn't apply to him, tried to leave, got arrested, then whines about oppression.

He probably DID get what he deserved.  (And is probably LOVING playing the martyr.)

And by the way--I think Atlanta is great.  There's nothing that anyone mentioned that doesn't apply in lots of other places, including the east and west coast metropolises.

Well, except that in the interview video at HNN and in the Boston Globe write-up, I didn't see much evidence the Felipe Fernandez-Armesto feels particularly "oppressed."  Maybe you're reading your own prejudices and desires into this narrative?  In the interview video, he seemed to think mostly the whole thing's a bit ridiculous, and also a bit of a hoot.  In the BG article, he's worried about being able to cross the border if an arrest is on his record.  Which, given BushCo, Inc.'s own record in these matters, might be an understandable concern.

During the 84 Olympics in Los Angeles, LA's finest decided it was time to implement the jaywalking rule.  There were many confused and upset foreigners being cited for doing what comes naturally at home.  Ignorance of the law is no excuse (or so I'm told) but I did not hear of any citations before or since for jaywalking.

I read the article and listened to the three-part interview.  I have no idea whether the cops or the historian were right or wrong, but I love a good story, and this historian sure does know how to tell a good story.  Guess that's what makes him a good historian.

Frankly, I can't stand Atlanta - being in it, near it, or driving around it.  I was once in a traffic jam where it took me one hour - ONE SOLID HOUR - to get from a freeway off ramp to my hotel a half-mile away WHICH I COULD SEE FROM MY CAR!!!!!!  I hate Atlanta.

Genespleen, I guess I should have said that some of the POSTS here seem to view this as some sort of oppression.  My reaction is clearly based just on what people here have said.

Wow, this post makes me lery of the Atlanta area.
We are considering a move to Decatur, does anyone have info on what it is like there? We like the area because there are many Universities to apply at and there is a great private school that we would like our kids to attend. We also like the mild climate.

We want to be in an area that has community and culture, not a large city but a great small town. Lived in Charlottesville Va for a while and loved it there. Sadly, there are no jobs in academia that are not at UVA and UVA is out of the league.

So, any advice on small towns that are great or Decatur?

I'll be the first to say that I am biased towards Atlanta, but Decatur is really nice if you stay on the East Ponce side - near the downtown. There are lots of nice coffeeshops, resturants, and pubs. They have wonderful festivals (the Decatur Beer Fest is great) and it is a very progressive, friendly place. The real estate is no unreasonable. I imagine you are talking about sending your kids to Padea? Great school with a wonderful reputation and in a great location (on the Atlanta side of historic Ponce De Leon Ave). You will be in good proximity to Agnes Scott and Emory and Georgia State University is a 15 min train ride away. I have friends who have lived there for about four years and find it's a great place to raise a family.

t_folk,

Thank you for the tips. I do not know the school you speak of, we are looking at the Waldorf school. My elder son has attended them and we love them, the one in Decatur is beginning a high school. I have read a great deal about the area but it's never the same as knowing someone there. Community is something you cannott read about in a guide book or Chamber or Commerce site.

Many thanks for the tips. I will look into it more. Atlanta is bigger than I want to raise a family, I lived in San Fran for many years, the benefits are great if you are single but with kids, a big city just becomes a pain in the butt.  (mommy, I have to pee....noooowwww) Where do you pull over? That kind of thing and many many more.

Lime, my best friends from grad school live in Decatur right by Agnes Scott.  In my opinion (and that of my wife, whose opinion is mine in all things, as a Dickens character might say), Decatur is easily the nicest area of Atlanta, maybe excepting Virginia-Highlands and Poncy-Highlands (close by and very similar, actually)  and it has tremendous community spirit.  The festivals (in addition to beer there's art, and this last Labor Day was a new book festival that unfortunately was truncated by a huge rainstorm) meet with tremendous enthusiasm and attendance.  The Oakhurst neighborhood has had a lot of revitalization and has a nice little art gallery, some fabulous restaurants, and an old-fashioned feel.

The quality of life is really splendid.  My friends have two kids--about 6 and 10ish--and they really love it there.  Good houses are expensive, but not San Fran or L.A. or San Diego or NYC expensive, and other aspects of the cost of living are pretty reasonable.

You do, however, need a Labrador or golden retriever if you want the keys to the city.

If I could be provost at Agnes Scott (not bloody likely, alas) I'd die a happy dean.
