Say you live on the west coast and have been invited to Providence, R.I. for an on campus interview.  They have instructed you to book your flight  and promised to reimburse you for the air tickets.  Instead of flying in and out of Providence solely for the interview, is it okay if I book a flight into Boston and a flight out of New York so that I can visit friends and family while I'm out on the east coast?  I have compared the ticket prices and to do it the way I'd like actually saves the university something like eighty dollars, but I don't want to raise any red flags for the committee by handing in ticket stubs for Boston and New York when they expected me to fly into Providence.  Any thoughts?

Call and ask them.  It's as simple as that.  When they hear it'll be cheaper, there should be no objections.

There are two ways the SC could view such a request: that you're an efficient person who maximizes time and looks for ways to save money, or that you're not terribly serious about the job and are looking at this as a chance for an all-expenses-paid trip to visit family.

I considered doing this for one campus visit and decided against it for reason #2. I know only one person who has done it (and the SC said yes), and didn't get the job (don't know if that had anything to do with it).

But I can say that my SC and department would look very unfavourably on that, again for reason #2.

Okay, Red Queen's response has convinced me to pay for the airfare myself.  But now here's another question.  Is it okay if I just don't ask to be reimbursed for the flights or could that itself raise a red flag?

I think the advice was not about payment, but about the trip.  You should use the campus visit trip exclusively for the campus visit, not as an opportunity to visit friends and family, regardless of who pays for what.  You don't want there to be any suggestion that you aren't serious about the job--and visiting family while on the trip will suggest that you are not serious about the job.

Besides, when you get the job, you will be much closer to those friends and family members and can visit them when you move.  =)

If you really don't mind paying for the flights yourself then do so -- some other time; call it a vacation.  Meanwhile, heed CBL's advice.

Wow, I am *so* happy I ran this question by the folks on this board.  My inclination was just to go ahead with the extended trip.  Now I'll scrap that idea and just fly in and fly out of Providence as expected.  I really want this job and I don't want to needlessly give offense or cause for concern.

I agree with all the posters above, but one thing: if you're actually talking about Providence, and it's not just an example, I think it would be reasonable to fly in and out of Boston. I've done so many a time, as Logan is a bigger and nicer airport, and you can often get cheaper deals. There's a bus from Logan to downtown Providence. That way, depending on your flight times, you might get yourself a meal or even overnight visit with your relatives/friends.

Again, not trying to undo the basic points made above, just a thought if the times and prices work out...
