Hello, I'm from midwest and never lived in southeast part of the country. Is Athens great place for family? I have two kids and it is important to know how the public school system is like there, too. Thanks for info.

I spent several undergraduate years in Athens and regularly return to the city. I am a huge fan of the city -- if you are going to live in Georgia and not in Atlanta -- Athens would be at the top of my list. The city has wonderful cultural offerings, is relatively progressive, and quite pretty. If a job ever opened up there, I would apply in a heartbeat.
As for schools, most people I am/was acquainted with attended Athens Academy. I would check out their website. I cannot really say that much about the public schools in the city.

I have lived in Athens for five years now, and in other places in Georgia for many more. All the people I've ever talked to who were raised here or who brought up their children here are really happy with the place. As the previous poster said, there are many progressive people here, as well as interesting (and inexpensive!) things to do, particularly with children. About the school system, I've seen absolutely wonderful students (as in, national prize winners in things like photography and music) that went to public schools here as well as mediocre ones. I like it, but I'm ready for something more urban myself.
In sum, I think it's a nice place to grow up. Not a fabulously exciting one, but nice. And pretty safe.

I went to 1st and 2nd grade at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Athens. From what I remember, they had some pretty killer sack races.

...and the amazing Vic Chesnutt chose to base himself in Athens during one of his most creative periods. Athens is a great great town.

Way cool town, but just remember that it is a college town for a University with right around 40,000 undergrads ... the downtown life can be "interesting" on the weekends. It is a beautiful city.

Aren't parts of Atlanta 45 minutes away from Atlanta?

Aren't parts of Atlanta 45 minutes away from Atlanta? Yeah, and until they finish the construction on 316, it will be more like and hour and a half from Atlanta to Athens.

They used to be. Now they're more like 2 hrs away. Pylon: also from Athens.
