Lucilla-

Because of the nature of the positions that he's applying for, he won't "hear" from anywhere. For medical residencies, they interview at tons of hospitals. By the end of Feb, they then submit a list to some central database, ranking the hospitals in order of preference.
Meanwhile, the hospitals also are ranking their applicants in order of preference. On March 15, some giant computer matches up the lists and spits out to each applicant ONE place where they will train at. That's final, unless you want to repeat the process next year. So the last time you have control is in Feb when you submit your rankings.

If you think this is an insane and stupid process, I could not agree more.

Lucilla,

I went through this with my ex. I was already in a tenure track position when he finished med school. We chose that position for me because of the number of medical schools and residencies within a semi-reasonable drive and then we held our breath for a year while he was still in med school (back home part of the year) and i was living in the new place).  Fortunately, he got the residency he liked best, which was an hour's drive from my school. We moved near his residency and I commuted (i didn't have to work 36 hour shifts...).  We were very fortunate.

It'll work out, eventually!

Oh, didn't know you were dealing with a match day scenario...so the main thing is to keep breathing and move ahead daily. It's gotten much better, right? I hope?

What if TT jobs were awarded in the same way residencies are assigned...?

Well, no one would be worried that they would be unemployed.  Instead, they'd worry that they would end up at schools that were absolutely wrong for them and could never hope to escape.

There are no unmixed blessings.

That's exactly right! We debate on that all the time-- on one hand, unless my husband really messes up, he WILL have a job somewhere. But it may not be one that he would have chosen (hopefully that won't happen...)
