Always makes me picture cheerleaders: "rah rah rah!"

There you have it, folks: the most enlightened beings in our world are cheerleaders.

I hope Francie is reading this thread. She loves to see nice things written about cheerleaders.

I think these are the children who never hear no in their lives. What will they become as adults?

After reading notaprof's assessment--

"None of this is that new.  I thought all children came into the world thinking they are the center of the universe and it the job of parents and the educational system to gently disabuse them of that notion, in other words guide and train them so they can be productive members of society.
Sounds like the system and the parents of Indigoes (is that the correct pluralization?) are just not doing their jobs and just giving a nice sounding label to the result to make it seem it was intentional or more accurately, beyond their control."

--I'm quietly applauding at my computer station.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

and fiona is right on about the narcissists; I have an ex (he's even a musician) who in middle age displayed with disturbing accuracy the DSM's list of narcissistic traits. He was the variety that was doted upon by his adoring mother. Now he can only deal with companions who hang on his every word.

Hold on a second -- I just want to clarify that clinical narcissism involves a narcissistic wound, which is the root cause of later narcissistic behavior. This is not the same as regular people exhibiting narcissistic traits (which we all do, to a greater or lesser degree) or just plain being spoiled. Looks like a duck, walks like a duck... might not be a duck.

In the little reading I have done on the subject, I have not really seen it said that we should bend over backwards to accommodate the self-centered behavior of these supposed Indigo children. Instead, the reading that I have seen tries to present an explanation for this kind of behavior (which I tend not to believe but about which I don't have enough information to really categorically deny), but has concentrated more on trying to help children with these issues better integrate into society. No matter what the cause of their behavioral issues, the solutions I have seen proposed (again, in my extremely limited reading on the subject) basically involve good and sensitive parenting. Regardless of why these children act the way they do, they will not be successful in life unless they learn to play well with others.

I'm almost tempted to send that link to a friend whose 10 year old is diverging farther and farther from his peer group. After going all over the Northeast to see what to do with him, she finally found a psychologist who told her that he's gifted, but with ADD. Of course, it's the teacher's fault that he can't function in the classroom, so she's pulled him out of school (ours is one of the top public school districts in the country) because he's just bored.

So I guess my little buddy who can't hold himself together under any stresses whatsoever is really an Indigo Child who will save the planet. Not a child with some special needs that the school district has an arsenal of professionals to work with. He doesn't need to learn how to function in society at large, because that's too hard.

It's so sad that this BS is marketed so slickly. I'm sure that parents of challenging children fall for it, hook, line, and sinker.

I'm inclined to agree with tamiam on this one.

While psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, counselors, and analysts may try to argue that a "narcissistic wound" causes NPD, I am not entirely convinced they are right.  After all, the experience of narcissistic wounding, presumably, has been around for a long, long time.  To paraphrase (or quote; I'm feeling ignorant tonight), there is nothing new under the sun, including narcissistic wounding.  The astounding rise in the diagnosis of personality disorders, including NPD, is quite new.  We really have to conclude, IMHO, that NPD, narcissistic personality disordered traits such as described for these "indigo children," and other significantly disordered personality traits involving either those who push many folks' buttons or are profoundly narcissistic (so that interpersonal relationships are often compromised) truly are the result of a culture of entitlement, of self-involvement, of self-indulgence, that has not been seen in centuries if not millennia.

These kids, and the increased rates of diagnosis of personality disorders, really seem to me to be culturally induced and not unique psychiatric issues.

I guess ultimately I don't buy this particular enthusiasm.  Kids are kids are kids.  Treat them as kids, not adults nor amazingly undiscovered geniuses.

WRT the silly newagey website referenced above, about identifying indigos, why would anyone not born yesterday believe it?  Are American parents today that stupid?  My grandparents, none of whom ever saw the inside of a college, would have flushed such nonsense down the potty with utter contempt, immediately.

No, wait, that was 'Starman'....

The Star Child was the little girl on the TV show V who was half alien half human but looked human.

The first reference I heard to indigo children was on either CSI or Law and Order-there was one in the plot, who I  think turned out to be the murderer.

I don't really watch THAT much TV, I only have it on when I grade.

And regarding the overabundance of ADHD kids - it cracks me up to see a parent talking about having to medicate her (usually a mom) child due to ADD right before giving said child an entire can (or bottle!) of full-sugared soft drink.  Sheesh.

Oh and whatever happened to RECESS and GYM at elementary schools?  They no longer exist at my niece's school - they've been replaced by computer class.
