I will interview for a teaching position in Salalah, Oman in the near future but would like your opinions on the country and area before then.  What can you tell me?  What is the cost of living for good housing--1-2 bedrooms--fully furnished?  What is a "good" teaching salary for that area?  Is it safe?  Is it cheap to eat and live?  Looking forward to your replies.

I know someone who works in administration there. They seem to be happy. I can check it out for you.

Salalah is a LONG LONG way from anywhere but Salalah.  As I remember it, it was a 10-12 hour drive through the featureless desert to get up to Muscat.  I was at SQU and made a couple trips down to Salalah and it was an interesting place to spend a couple of days.  It might also be an interesting place to start out from if the border with Yemen is open (it wasn't while I was there).

I don't know anything about the University of Dhofar and I can offer any advice on current cost of living issues.  If you're single you can problaby live a comfortable life and even save a bit.  Oman's not the place to go if you just want to roll up huge bank accounts.  If you have kids you need to seriously thing about the educational options.

I admire your well-traveled experience.   Where have you *not* been?

My goodness, that was an exceptionally good analysis of the forum.

Sometimes it seems as thought I've worked and traveled "all over" but when you actually look at the map, you realize that it's only the tiniest little fraction of all of the places on earth.  It's so easy for example to say "I've been to China."  But what miniscule portion of China did I experience during a 6 week trip.  I managed to sneak into Llasa when it was still officiall "closed" but does that mean I've "been to Tibet?"

During the 12 years I spend in the Gulf, travel was the largest reason for continuing.  Two to three times a year I was able to get away to exotic places (well at least places that sounded exotic to others "back home").

Eventually I turned this penchant for travel into a non-very lucrative part-time career as a travel photojournalist.  And the name of the game in (adventure) travel photography is to "go where no man has gone before."  So you start looking around for places that are closed at the moment and then try to figure a way in.  I got into Vietnam years an d years ago (before it was officially open to individual travelers) by paying some guy in Bangkok to slip my passport (along with some cash I assume) through the back door of the Vietnamese embassy there.  I got into Moscow on a Businessman's visa to avoid having to deal with Inturist.  A couple years later I joined a tour of Kamchatka being organized by a bunch of "underemployed" volcanologists.  After flying around from volcano to volcano on aging Soviet helicopters, I took my visa and disappeared into "the backwoods" for 6 weeks.  I was also one of the first people to visit southern Yemen after its (off and on) reunification with the north.

But then I've never been to New York (or really anywhere east of the Mississippi) and very been to Hawaii, or a thousand other places that "less well traveled" people have gone.

Now I've settled into a life in small town Japan and my "traveling days" seem far behind.

I would appreciate your contacting the person you know in administration there, Dhafar University, and check it out for me.  I look forward to your reply.

It takes you a month and a half to get back to this thread?  Be thankful if helpful is still willing to help you.

Yes, it took me a month and a half to get back to this sight as you so noted and I do hope helpful can help.  You absolutely have no knowledge of concerning the reasons why I have not been back to the site so leave well enough alone.  I am not as perfect as you seem to be.

No, I cannot know your specific situation.  I do not know what has kept you from finding internet access for a six week period.  I do not mean to insult.

What I can offer is a gentle suggestion that if you start a thread where information solicited is important to you, you might wish to consider attending that thread more closely.  You may receive more rapid and thorough assistance.  There is a possibility that helpful might not return to assist you.  I would assist you if I could, but I do not know the area.

PS. That first 'sight' should be 'site' !

you may want to check out the site below.  It won't talk specifically about teaching, but will give you good general information.

My contact says Salalah is an absolutely beautiful green oasis out in the hinterland. Cost of living is normal for Oman, akin to Muscat. University is nice.

Green oasis is a relative term in Arabia.  Yes, Salalah gets the tail end of the Indian Monsoon and so at that time the hills surrounding Salalah turn a pleasant shade of green.  But we're not talking palm forests here.  Bear in mind that this area's historical claim to fame is its frankincense trees which are little more than ugly scrub that grow in semi-desert conditions.

And yes, Salalah is a long long ways away from anyplace else.  Still, the town itself has grown substantially and it would probably be a pleasant enough place to spend a couple of years.
