And once again....

What the hell are you people talking about???!!!

Tamiam, it seems a World of Warcraft team, er, guild is trying to recruit some of CHE's best and brightest to play the online gaming sensation as part of an NIH study.

I am not a professor at all, despite what I say.

Pindar is a winery that makes a delicious meritage called "Mythology."  It's on Long Island.

The rest of their stuff is so-so, but Mythology is really good.

A World of Warcraft guild populated with academics.  Neat.

Doesn't that pretty much describe the CHE Forums?

Well yes, but on the CHE forums you don't get to kill stuff, snatch their booty, complete quests, and gain power.  Fun stuff, that.

I have to believe the whole NIH grant thing was a joke.  NIH paying people to play WoW?  No way in he-double hockey sticks.

Anyone ever try second life?

Funding consists of coins given, in game, to your character.  We have generous start up funds available.  I'm not at liberty to disclose where these monies come from, be it N.I.H. title IX or a certain maker of adamintine weapons. Remember, you also transfer a character to the Kirin Tor realm, where Tiger Team One operates.

Do you guys know Torvill Mortensen? She works on gaming culture, esp. MUDs and RPGs, both online and RL. (http://torillsin.blogspot.com/) Is this set-up in WoW for academic purposes or just to have a ton of folks with good analysis and strategy skills running a team? What's the ultimate goal?

As Rowdy Rowdy Piper said in a movie, "I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. . . and I'm all out of bubble gum."

That summarizes our goals.

In our last story line, a sinister gnomish Mastermind was reading something suscipicously close to Heidegger's "Question concerning technology" in order to solve The Riddle of Steel. . . from the first Conan film.  Tiger Team One was able to stop his research.  This same gnome attempted to create a device called the Genociderzomatic.  Which we also destroyed.

We are not researching WoW. We are scholars who like to play.

I completely understand your quirky, insider-style references to WoW gaming.  Great stuff.  Yet, you might want to be a little more straightforward regarding what you do and what you want for the rest of the people here.  Some folks don't even know WoW exists or what is the purpose.

Just writing about WoW makes me wanna play.  Must resist!

The forum looks empty on your site.  Is the guild new?

Right.  Not all academics watch South Park or are currently parenting a pre-teen or teen of the male variety.

WoW, Runescape, et. al.  Just another front in the parent-teenager culture wars.

Untenured, you clearly need to give into your urge.  Doesn't Mann, in one of his novels say, "if it agrees with you, it's not a vice"

Our guild is less than one week old.  It is very small.  We haven't really attempted recruiting in game, yet.  We would like to see if we could actually get some fellow academics in the guild before we start recruiting from the whole server.  We are not an "end-game" raid guild, but are part of a coalition that gives some access to the large raid dungeons.  I am a keen PvPer and will be organizing some arena teams.  Our goal is to have a small guild with people who RP and appreciate low-brow dialogue and plot in the service of high-brow/esoteric themes.    To plainly summarize our goals--

  • Get a group of mature, fun RPers together
  • Utilize our vent to do some set-team PvPing
  • Utilize our connections with other guilds to provide end-game raiding opportunities

The National Endowment for the Arts did not award a grant to Tiger Team One or any other organization or individual associated with a report appearing on the Chronicle of Higher Education website and forum. The item reported in the forum noted that Tiger Team One received “Title IX funds and a (sic) N.E.A. grant,” and the Chronicle reprinted that information making the assumption that N.E.A. stood for National Endowment for the Arts. This misinformation -- which now has spread to several other online publications – easily could have been avoided if someone had bothered to verify the information. It is incumbent upon the Chronicle of Higher Education to issue a correction.

WoW is a cheap ticket to the no-productivity zone.

I considered Runescape for a while.  Cute little game.

WoW is a cheap ticket to the no-productivity zone.

I considered Runescape for a while.  Cute little game.

Cute for the 11-15 set.

Pros:
  • At $5/month for a subscription, it's way easier on the budget than an XBox 360, et. al.
  • Chance to play with friends and even stay connected to friends who live out of the area.
  • Good opportunity to learn about online safety, including issues of intellectual property and violations of the game's TOS.
  • The economic lessons learned, especially the hard way when one is scammed in the game.  Consequences are not as quite painful since no real money or goods have been lost.
  • An email address for parents to contact the company that owns the game.

Cons:
  • Well, that "cons" are part of game, and that many players want to take advantage of younger or naive players through "real-world" trading even though the game does not allow it.
  • Avoiding the game's addictiveness requires a lot of monitoring.
  • Physical isolation from peers.
  • At our house at least, the constant chatter about it from Little Francie #1 becomes unbearable at times.  We must keep repeating, "This too shall pass."

Our N.E.A. grant is up for renewal!  Xsis the Wise, Sage of Orgrimmar and Prothonotary to the High Council, has demanded that Tiger Team One submit the following material:

1.  Evidence of Effectiveness.  In the past, Tiger Team One has submitted Night Elf ears.  However, Xsis the Wise has threatened our funding because the ears themselves are not indicative of the strentgth of the foe.  He suggest whole demon heads, dragon heads, etc...

2.  Evidence of Progression.  Xsis the Wise write, "Tiger Team One has secured a fearsome reputation, but we worry that it is has become complacent.  Is Tiger Team One resting on its laurels?"

3.  Compelling Need.  Quite frankly, I'm shocked that they would ask us to justify this!  Even in his study in the Valley of Wisdom I am sure that Xsis can hear the screams and lamentations of the women and children that suffer from the nightly Alliance attacks on the Crossroads!

Please review the above criteria.  We will meet in Bloodhoof village to discuss how best to respond to Xsis.  N.E.A. funding is crucial to the long term success of Tiger Team One.  The Northrend Exploration Association has many guilds from which to choose and we must make sure Tiger Team One remains it's "go to" strike team!
