WoW Guild: ABDs considered, Ph.D. preferred Tiger Team One, a medium RP guild on the RP server Kirin Tor (Horde), has recently received Title IX funds and a N.E.A. grant [ Note from moderator: A spokeswoman for the National Endowment for the Arts said the N.E.A. did NOT award a grant to Tiger Team One or any other organization or individual associated with this post.], as well as a "Stone Guard's Stipend," to recruit members and begin operations. Besides an advanced degree, applicants should be familiar with Rutger Haur films. Successful applicants will be expected to integrate PvP with RP. Chosen applicants will receive up to 5 silver coins in start up funds and access to a vent server. Future publications should address Conan-like dialogue and simply morality tales akin to Xena. Complete discretion assured. Our membership includes a MacArthur Fellow and an emeritus of the Institute for Advanced Study. Our manifesto is posted on http://www.tigerteamone.com. I played Everquest. I will not play World of Warcraft. WoW is just too enjoyable. I won't leave my house. I won't publish. My job will disappear as I ascend to level sixty with addiction-like tenacity.

The problem is... I think this is serious.
My friend just got a tenure-track position at a Big Ten university. His dissertation was on the virtual economy of the World of Warcraft. I saw a NYT article a few weeks ago that cited by name several academics who play WoW. I was just looking at the Institute for Advanced Study trying to guess who the emeritus is. |

Serious or not, it would be have more credibilty/humor/whatever if the OP had spelled Rutger Hauer's name correctly.

What academic would want to play PvP? I get my share of PvP just walking down the hallways at my institution.

It's not so much that I find the idea strange (or even distasteful)... it's just that the credential requirements seem a bit high, given the guild's stated aims (and presentation style) don't really seem to be consistent with the standard.
Does the NIH grant stipulate that all participants in the study hold Ph.D.s? It seems like the data you'd get back from such a study would be of dubious value, but I guess I'd need to see the grant proposal.
Is it available online?
