Just thought I'd drop a post b/c... I just got a phone interview for a school that had scheduled campus interviews *right after* MLA. Looks like their top 3-4 candidates didn't pan out, and now they are on their long-shortlist.

Yeah!!

So "no news is good news"... still.

I'd second that.  I got an invitation to campus for a job for which initial interviews were held at MLA.  No-one posted previous campus visits on the wiki, so I have no idea if I was among the first choices or if they've had several people in and didn't make a hire.  I'm assuming the latter.

I received this notice from my virus software when I went to the Wiki today:

When we tested this site we found links to ipdz.com, which our analysis found to be deceptive or fraudulent.

Just something I'm curious about.  I've been following the MLA wikis and have noticed the increasing presence of updates along the lines of "Heard they made an offer."  Where do people think this information is coming from?

Should I be adding information by date or alphabetically?  Just want to do the right thing (in case the karma matters at this crucial time).

If you check the thing every day then listing by date makes things go faster.  If you have to look through all the schools to find the new one it gets annoying (at least for the lower stuff like interviews.  I think keeping the schools by name is fine for the listing section at the top, assuming you are checking the bio WIKI). My 2.1 cents (inflation)

Flyguy (and other interested parties), I recently found that you can see the recent changes with two links.  (I found this by spending way too much time on the Wiki looking for every bit of information I could find out about jobs.)

(1) Within your field (and subspeciality, if applicable), click on the "History" button at the top left side of the page (between "Edit Page" and "Discussion").
(2) You will see displayed a list of revisions.  Keep the "current rev. #" radio box selected on the left side of the column under the heading "Diff" and choose the last revision to which you want to compare by selecting the radio button on the right side. (You can go back all the way to the beginning)
(3) Click the "Diff" title and you will see a listing of all of the changes, line by line (the line numbers are on the left) and what changes where made.

Hope that helps.  It makes it easier for me to find what postings affect my job list.

I would imagine some of it is "insider information" and some is mere gossip.  Let's face it; the academic community is smaller than it looks and word spreads fast.  For example, I have posted some generic "offer has been made" information about four positions when I received news from friends about offers and acceptances. However, I've only included that information after I knew they'd officially accepted the position.  I did have more gossipy information (unverified or twice-removed) about other positions that I could have posted, but I elected not to include that in the interest of maintaining the integrity of the Wiki.  Unfortunately, it's impossible to determine what is mere hearsay and what is substantive.

The HR office at my institutions says that we can't tell anyone that they are out of the running until we have a signed contract from our new faculty member.  So the next time we do a search I am going to update the wiki myself as a way of giving the poor job seekers some feedback.  I urge other SC members to do the same.

Hey all,

I just found the WIKI and have been trying to post new info. It keeps reporting "you entered captcha text incorrectly, please try again." Can anyone  tell me exactly how to post a new line--starting with a new month (for June)?

I'm having the same trouble that boulderdoc is having with the wiki, but I haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong.

Boulderdoc:  Can you let me know how you resolved the problem.

Thanks.

I think I can help. I was making a silly mistake. After you make changes to the text, go down to the bottom of the page. There is a little box called "captcha"-- I think a funny way of saying "capture"--there are two words on the box that will change each time you return to that page that are written in a funky text. These little boxes prevent spammers or others from easily posting a billion ads using some computer program. Just type the words you see into the open space and then hit save page.

Good luck!

I am trying to add something to these pages and keep getting this message.

"Your entered captcha text was wrong. Please try again."

What I don't understand is it says to type in the two words, but it doesn't say whether these are with a space between the words or not. Plus sometimes the words are hard to read.

There should be a space, and the field is case sensitive. They are sometimes hard to read, so sometimes it's taken me a couple of tries, too. It should work, though.
