It must be that time of year, as I got mine yesterday.  And it shreds into nice long strips suitable as emergency bookmarks.

The picture in the brochure shows the tables arranged in a rectangle! I'ld think they would use an actual round table, wouldn't you? Well, at least the people are in a nice wood-paneled room with a vaulted ceiling and tall windows...

The good people at ORT are devoted to practicing the high art of irony.  The rectangular table at a "Round Table" is a clue.  It tells us how to understand their use of words like "prestigious", "intellectual", and "the common good".

I saw a whole stack of ORT invitations in the incoming mail the other day.  I guess my school is just that excellent.  And I recently got an email followup from ORT, reminding me of the invitation they had previously sent.  They are persistent.

And yet again, I have no invitation.

I did, however, get an invitation for the Who's Who of College Instructors.  I'm sure their standards are pretty high, just like the ORT, considering this is my first semester as an instructor of record.

I'm gonna send in my materials right away so that next year I have a shot at the ORT.  After all, they must be pulling their list of suckers qualified, prestigious candidates from somewhere.

Actually, the rectangle is a nod to an Arthurian legend: that the Knights of the Round Table used to sit at a square table--but they tended to sit down with their swords on. (Eventually, the table became round.)

OK, it was funny when my H.S. history teacher told us this joke when I was 14. I'm still puzzled by the mechanics of this joke--and of course, the ORT.

ORT goes feminist (or feminazi, depending on your point of view).

Dr. Vicky Martin, chair of Liberty University’s Sport Management Department, has been invited to attend the Oxford Round Table at Hertford College at the University of Oxford in England, March 14-19, 2010.

The event, “Women in the Academy: Prospects and Promises,” consists of a small interdisciplinary group of scholars who have a particular interest in gender equity in the education establishment.

Of course, remembering that LU is the Jerry Falwell univeristy helps us keep this in perspective.  ORT for young Champions for Christ

Yeah. Let us know how this works out. Of course, maybe she's just going to see if she can be a part of Jesus College, so that she can have "jesus" in her email address.

A spammer on the ORT thread. How delicious!

I suppose I'll have to console myself with the fact that he's quoting me . . . although looking at his spoor all over the fora, I really don't think he's very discriminating in his plagiarism . . .

[bump]

While catching up on my journal-article reading tonight, I noticed that an author acknowledged presenting a manuscript at the ORT. This is a senior scholar in my field (whom I rather like) and an a-tier journal. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Finally received an invitation! They have me in the wrong field, but since it's interdisciplinary, I guess it doesn't matter... .

Saw an advert for the "Oxford Experience"-courses given at Christ Church College by tutors. How do these compare with ORT?

Week-long, with 6 nights room and board instead of 5.
A coherent program, rather than papers slapped together.
Your fellow participants are unlikely to be academics.
Price: 1050 pounds, about $1710. Versus the ORT's $2940.
You be the judge. But I think this is one more datapoint suggest ORT is grossly overpriced.

Hey - this is another one.
www.internationaljournal.com

They charge far less, although accommodation not included.
I do find some "legitimate" people (like a tenured professor and famous musician presenting at one of the conferences last year)

I am glad that some people responded to my post. I've decided not to attend.

Of course!  The ORT never dies.
