word of warning...I posted earlier on the Oxford Roundtable and have referred to this as a tourist venture and not a 'prestigious Oxford event' and the Roundtable is now threatening me with a lawsuit for defamation. Honestly, I had lost interest, but I suppose this changes things. Interestingly, they have changed their website to state 'with offices at' Harris Manchester College, although I'm not sure what real difference that makes.

Sorry about lawsuit threat. What exactly are they threatening and what do they want you to do to make amends?

They are threatening me with a defamation suit and want me to write a letter of apology for saying that the $3000 fee is 'outrageous' and that they are not an actual prestigious academic conference. My point is that they are not related to Oxford University. While I'm sure there are people who want to attend an event in Oxford and can have a great time, all of these press releases on the web suggest that people actually believe that the University has invited them personally (not a mass mailing) to speak. This was certainly true of the people who contacted me directly to ask about the ORT.

Just curious... how did they find out who you were based on a posting here on the Chronicle BBS?

They did not get my name from this discussion forum. Months ago I sent a single email in response to one of the many press releases on the web, asking the individual if they were aware that ORT was not the same thing as Oxford University, and that person sent my email to them. Strangely, however, ORT has some basic facts wrong; they seem to think I am running an internet blog (I'm not), and they misreport where I'm actually affiliated within Oxford.

The financial incentives for everyone involved make such an event very successful.
The professor wins as he or she is quite often not paying for the conference and is therefore not price sensitive.
The ORT wins as they are able to charge large sums of money.
The university wins as it is able to claim an Oxford association.
Hooray for all.

Friends, I am pleased to announce that every one of you has been nominated to participate in the Ozark Round Table. This prestigious and exclusive event is only $2500. We will meet in the hallowed halls of Rocky Hollow Baptist Bible College of Cosmetology to discuss the great issues of our time such as barbecue and catfish. You can get your college to pay and put it on your vita. No checks--cash only please.

(I've lived in the UK all my life and never heard of ORT until I saw it mentioned here).

Interesting that the coat of arms on the Oxford Round Table website is not the coat of arms of Oxford University. Not even close.

Interesting that the coat of arms on the Oxford Round Table website is not the coat of arms of Oxford University. Not even close.
After certain problems with the old university coat of arms escaping into the public domain, the university created a revised version, the belted shield you see on the university website. The new version of the arms is a registered trade mark: use it without permission (and even if you're a member of the university staff, there's a couple of pages of instructions about how and why it can be used) and the university's lawyers will be calling with a cease and desist notice. Which reminds me, if you're in Oxford and looking to buy a sweatshirt, please don't buy one of the ones with the old coat of arms (the book and the crowns inside a shield shape) on it, as the university makes absolutely no money on them.

I just checked out the list as well. Under the governmental section, thank heavens no U.S. federal government officials are listed. I'd definitely write to 60 Minutes if that were the case. Although I did notice that several "state senators" were listed---including one from West Virginia, wherein "West Virginia" was spelled wrong.
