Is Twitter the same as Instant Messaging?

Maybe this post belongs on the Fogey thread. Hold on while I adjust the stylus on my turntable.

Twitter is a combination of Facebook and Instant Messaging/text messaging on a cell phone. In other words, it is vapid, useless information that is broad cast rather narrow casted (ie. instant messaging is only to one person; twitter is to tons of people [much like facebook or a web-log]).

As to whether twitter increases interpersonal communication about anything important, well, YMVV.

My father keeps on saying he doesn't see the point of Facebook.  Well, I don't see the point of all those "funny" emails [e.g., 10 ways that men are different from women] he keeps on forwarding to me, but I don't go on about it.

I agree.  The delete button is my friend.  "What did you think of [that random, poorly written, attempt to be humorous] I sent you yesterday?"  "It was interesting."  Somehow the clueless never catch on that I say that about everything because it seems like a safe response to something I didn't bother to read.

It's like IM, but in a blog format.

I have no idea why someone would need twitter to keep up with a format that can be delivered in a feed, as described above.  What I really don't get is why business and industry are paying people to maintain a trivial method of distribution that is less robust than an RSS feed.

I use Twitter quite extensively. It's helped me make and develop some professional contacts, keep abreast of trends and issues in my research areas; maintain a low level of ongoing contact with people met at conferences, or "meet" them beforehand (which eases subsequent interactions and may, in at least one instance, lead to a collaborative project); answer student questions where others can see (so I don't get twenty emails on the same subject); and find new ideas for teaching and research.

I suspect that the usefulness varies dramatically by discipline, but in my case it's not (usually) a waste of time.

What I really don't get is why business and industry are paying people to maintain a trivial method of distribution that is less robust than an RSS feed.

I assume that someone made a persuasive case for "all the kids are doing it and that's the audience we need now.  The parents will come on board as the technology spreads so we need to get on the bandwagon now!".

I spent a good bit of time in airports yesterday so I bought a stack of magazines and newspapers to read.  Nearly every one of them had at least one article on getting a job.  I was amused and saddened to read how many of those articles suggested subscribing to Twitter feeds for the desired companies, perusing their Facebook page, commenting on companies' blogs, and initiating other trivial electronic interactions to "raise your visibility with potential employers".

I was also amused about the marketing suggestions in the business magazines about how the electronic interactions were the new standard so that failure to adopt implied a strong likelihood of business failure in the next year.  On the other hand, some of the same articles included statements like "And after a distinguished career in X, I completely retooled by self to get a new job in a different field.  It was hard starting over at age 27 as a novice in the new field, but now at 30..." that appeared to be without irony or any awareness that a field that can be mastered in three years of OJT with no education required is not something that should be bragged about.

For comparison, most trades require an apprenticeship of 4 to 6 years, then a few more years as a journeyman.  Masters become so after 10 to 15 years of OJT.
