Have you ever used Writeboard.com? A similar wiki, but password protected, and you can easily revert to old versions. It also includes a message board for each document.

How much time did it take you to set it up?
Not all that long, really. A couple of hours on Sunday afternoon. I keep finding stuff to add to it, though, which is fine, and as we go through the job season, we'll find more things to add to the sections dealing with interviews and offers. Have you ever used Writeboard.com? A similar wiki, but password protected, and you can easily revert to old versions. It also includes a message board for each document.
I don't know about the whole password-protected thing. I'm happy to work on the wiki to improve and manage it, but I don't want it to be my child forever. I also don't want people to think that I am trying to control who adds what to it -- and lots of people who don't read the fora might have things to add, and how would they get a password to be able to do it? I'm good with the "document changes as you go" system, and if it gets backed up every so often, then I hope it will work out. Of course, I'm happy to hear what others think about this. VP

Given these facts, one would indeed expect better reading comprehension as well as the basic knowledge that one cannot win a poo fight with an entire community.

I added a few things to the wiki this morning, short notes about -transcripts -teaching philosophy (included a link to an article that helped me when I was writing mine) -negotiation...somebody might want to check this, but my understanding has been that at least in the sciences it looks bad if you DON'T negotiate -phone interviews
that's about all I feel qualified to add for now, since I am on the job search myself.

What do yall think of adding a section "Deciding whether to apply" or something like that. I've been curious about why people choose to apply for different types of institutions, such as RO1 or CC or SLAC or public PUI. Also there was a thread a while back about determining whether a religious school is really religious, or top 4 things to consider when looking for a job, etc. I'm not sure if that should go in this wiki though, it seems like it could almost turn into its own wiki. or just stay in active discussion mode on the boards.

I am working on Do inside candidates have an unfair advantage?/I am an inside candidate. Do I have a chance?
Please alert me if this has already been done. I might not be done for a day or so, but will then need a private tutor since I don't know how to edit a wiki page.

Waxwing, it has not been done, and it's an excellent thing to add, IMHO. I will be glad to put up that info for you, or tell you how to do it (it's not hard). Why don't you PM me when you're ready to add it? What do yall think of adding a section "Deciding whether to apply" or something like that. I am not Lord of the Wiki (thank goodness), but I like the idea that that might be a topic best addressed by discussion rather than a summary answer. While I think the simpler job-app questions can be well-served by a wiki, I definitely think discussion on fora like these is important for some of the thornier questions, and this might be one of those. A compromise might be asking the mods to include these as some of the questions they compile in the "common questions" thread, and then link to those discussions from the wiki (rather than trying to summarize the content of those discussions, which might be more trouble than it's worth and less valuable besides). Linking might be a good way to meet this need. Just my thoughts, o'course. VP

Dear VP,
I just visited the wiki you started and I have to say Wow (and not wow as in troll but wow as in impressive!) Thanks for all the work.
I hope you can count your work here in you service to the field bonus points/extra credit but I guess you would have to out yourself to do so. I suggest that every faculty member show this to your dean and claim to be VP but I think you will have to pick up some musical skills to pull it off.

Hi there,
Last year, wasn't there a Wiki-something that listed information about what school had contacted someone for an interview? Does that exist this year? Where is it? I was thinking it might be nice to know who has gotten extra material requests from MLA searches.

The address for the job-posting wiki is: http://wikihost.org/wikis/academe/wiki/startThis is the wiki that can be updated to reflect the known status of searches in various disciplines. The job-seeking FAQ wiki, which addresses common questions job-seekers face in the hunt for employment in academe, can be reached from the wiki address above, or can be accessed directly at: http://wikihost.org/wikis/academe/wiki/academic_job-seeking_faqNew updates to the FAQ wiki include: -- research/teaching loads, credit hours, and course preps -- addition of another resource on salary -- other things that may be negotiated as part of an offer VP

Hi everyone, I started a wiki for FAQ's for job-seekers. I agree that info about the job search needs to be more readily available, and if our search function isn't doing the job, then maybe we can make something that will work better. It is not complete by any means, but it is a start. Please, please, please add to it and correct or amend what I already put up there. I started with the questions I posted when the mods asked for suggestions for the "common questions" topic. There are many more things that can be added, but this was about all I could do for one afternoon. I know that some posters think that instead of summaries, we should have links to discussion. I also know that some people prefer not to flip through long discussions; they just want answers. What I thought I would do is start with the summaries, and then when the mods finish the "common questions" section, post links to those to the wiki so that those who want to look those up can do so from the wiki. I need some help, particularly from folks who are in disciplines far removed from mine. http://wikihost.org/wikis/academe/wiki/academic_job-seeking_faqThanks, VP Fantastic resource! Thanks!

Is the information you've posted in the wiki coming from candidates, or from search committee members themselves? Or both? I'm comp and have gotten requests for additional info from Case Western, Pac Lutheran, and DePaul. And a few letters (SF State, Nebraska, Miami of Ohio) saying hey we got your stuff, you'll hear something sometime. No interviews yet. I HATE this. Then again, if something didn't require a due date I sent it off late. As for what I'm doing to pass the time: teaching 75 advanced writing students. And, of course, doing the Humpty Dance. "You've got it down/When you appear to be in pain."

Hi loopid, Be sure not to confuse the two wikis. The "have you heard?" wiki contains notification of the current status of searches for various positions. Most of this information comes from candidates, usually. The "job-seeking FAQ wiki" contains info and tips for the job-search process. This info mostly comes from those of us who have been around a long time and have sat on countless search committees, though of course anyone is able to contribute. It's most helpful to have info from people who really know, though. VP

What does "hu" stand for? I understand its meaning (I think) but not the abbreviation. I like to think it means "human". It reminds me when I did not know what "OP" meant, and I always thought it meant "post subject", but I was definitely wrong...
