So, just to let everyone know that it *does* happen -- I recently got an e-mail on a Friday for an on-campus interview the following week; we ended up settling on me arriving on Wednesday, visiting campus Thursday and Friday and flying back Friday evening. So, I found myself booking a flight with five days lead time.
I am, of course, delighted to have the on-campus interview. (Had a couple already, but I was just a close runner-up candidate). I just wanted to point out that last minute stuff happens...

Five days lead time? That's nothing. I just got finished with an on campus interview with only one day lead time. They called Wednesday, and I got on a plane on Thursday.

For my current position: Call on Friday, Flight on Thursday, interview and job offer on Friday.
I thought about it until the following Tuesday. :)

Congrats! I think I'd prefer such a quick turnaround. I have an on-campus next week that has been scheduled for about a month now, and it is nerve-wracking to have to keep my energy up for it, especially as rejections from other jobs come streaming in.

I actually find that I prefer the very fast ones. When I've had three weeks time, I overprepare, lose sleep, and generally get myself worked up into a tizzy that does not bode well for the actual interview. When I have less than a week, it's a mad rush to prepare, and then it's all over. Much, much better for my health.... |

I should point out that I talked with the SCC on Wednesday evening and flew out on Thursday morning. So the lead time was less than a day -- about 18 hours. BTW, it was probably one of my best interviews. I hope they were really impressed when I was able to come up with a teaching demo on the actual subject they wanted with less than a day to prepare. |
