Job-Seeking FAQ wiki

Hi everyone,

I started a wiki for FAQ's for job-seekers. I agree that info about the job search needs to be more readily available, and if our search function isn't doing the job, then maybe we can make something that will work better.

It is not complete by any means, but it is a start. Please, please, please add to it and correct or amend what I already put up there. I started with the questions I posted when the mods asked for suggestions for the "common questions" topic. There are many more things that can be added, but this was about all I could do for one afternoon.

I know that some posters think that instead of summaries, we should have links to discussion. I also know that some people prefer not to flip through long discussions; they just want answers. What I thought I would do is start with the summaries, and then when the mods finish the "common questions" section, post links to those to the wiki so that those who want to look those up can do so from the wiki.

I need some help, particularly from folks who are in disciplines far removed from mine.

Wow, VP. This is great. Could I suggest you also have an acronym section (one of these was started in the Let Us Know area) for things like TT, CC, R-1, etc, etc.

Maybe then the mod squad could take up kyle4's suggestion and pin the link to this site as a 'read me first' post.

Yes, lots of stuff needs to go up there still! Job talks, for one, and lots of other nitty-gritty stuff. It's not my intention to leave that all out, but I have to do it in chunks. I agree, acronyms too. Maybe that part I can work on tonight; shouldn't take too long.

Great work, VP. Some real gems there. This wiki is much better value than wading through the forum - you've obviously added a lot of value to the info in collating it.

Thanks. I've done some more updating -- clarified various sections, added some questions. It should be much easier to read now, I hope.

Thanks to whoever added the bit about scanning departmental letterhead. I made a further edit to the language used there because I don't think this is really recognized as a universal solution. I am not acting as an agent of the University when I'm seeking another job, so putting it on official U. letterhead, even if scanned, still seems inappropriate. I didn't remove that advice, only noted that it's not universally accepted as a solution to the ethical concern.

It will be interesting to see how we work together to update the wiki.

Yeah... but the thing about a Wiki is that OTHERS can add to it! Not to say that VP hasn't done a great job... she has. But it does't have to be something that is her 'burden' alone.

FYI, there's already a section on abbreviations acronyms, and common terms in the FAQ. Let me know if there are others you'd like me to add to the list.

I'm glad it is useful. I have been popping in to add stuff at odd times today, and I see that others are starting to do so also, which is great.

Can I make a suggestion? Since anyone can add to the document, it might be nice if we posted here who added what. In addition to keeping track of new additions, it will also help us figure out who we might want to talk about things with if we want to further clarify what was posted. For example, someone in the sciences (I assume) added science-related job posting links, which is great!

I'll start. My most recent additions for today deal with the following topics:
-- transcripts
-- feeling discouraged about a "failed" job search
-- time from app deadline to hearing something
-- how to find out the salary range of a job (AAUP/Chronicle link)
