Take my advice - check and then double check the time differences and calculations.  I was just caught out by a phone interview 2 hours early (on my cell, while I was walking between meetings). I quickly found a room to take the call, but without any notes it certainly didn't go as well as it should have (e.g. the question, "do you do research in area X" I fumble and say how my research in area Y relates to X, not even noting that half of my work - including one of the articles they have - is in area X and is where I'm looking to do future research).

Oh, and be prepared for that great question: Tell us about your research - I always struggle with how to describe all the various elements of my work without going on FOREVER!

Once had a phone interview with a school halfway around the world from where I was. On speakerphone at their end. It was a bit complicated to set up.

Be interesting.  Don't give brief answers and stop.

I recently had a telephone interview where, for the first couple of questions, I got a vibe that I was "over-answering" (the chief inquisitor cut me off twice) despite my best efforts to be succinct and focused. The questions were very open ended ("how does your research inform your teaching", etc.). So on the 4th question, I answered very specifically and concisely  and the panel of inquisitors seemed taken aback. I haven't heard anything more from that search committee (it's been 2 weeks now, so I assume I'm out of the running).

In general, my experiences with telephone interviews haven't gone well. When I get campus visits, I have a great track record for offers. All of my campus visits have been from schools that didn't schedule a phone interview with a committee first.
