Be interesting. Don't give brief answers and stop.
I recently had a telephone interview where, for the first couple of questions, I got a vibe that I was "over-answering" (the chief inquisitor cut me off twice) despite my best efforts to be succinct and focused. The questions were very open ended ("how does your research inform your teaching", etc.). So on the 4th question, I answered very specifically and concisely and the panel of inquisitors seemed taken aback. I haven't heard anything more from that search committee (it's been 2 weeks now, so I assume I'm out of the running).
In general, my experiences with telephone interviews haven't gone well. When I get campus visits, I have a great track record for offers. All of my campus visits have been from schools that didn't schedule a phone interview with a
committee first.
