I think it is stupid; but not a crime. She will get into other programmes and Acrimone's school will lose out on a great student. Someone who would eventually make them look good.

If they are (provably) discriminating against her, it could very well be a crime, depending on the basis of the discrimination.

My point was that I don't think they are provably discriminating against her. They are setting up stupid requirements--but as long as they are consistently stupid I don't think they are more than stupid.

Not that I think that any of that matters. She is better off going somewhere that appreciates her.

Random thoughts, not necessarily original:

1) Prejudice against age is obvious here, and pretty lame, let alone legal.

2) 'Philosophers' who fancy themselves intellectually superior to lawyers and business school grads are just snobs, and these professors are obviously intimidated by a woman who is their intellectual superior, and want to keep her out.

3) No undergrad applying to grad school in any discipline is expected to be a published author, period, and woe betide academia when/if that changes.

4) Remember, the lady is a hot-shot lawyer, and if you reject her for these lame reasons you state your colleagues are resorting to, she'll likely see through em and sue your department's arse off.

or she might, more likely, think it a total waste of time, and go to a school that accepts her.

I am not a professor at all, despite what I say.

Verdict: Ixnay on the udentstay.

The undergraduate grades were too low, and the personal statement was just a little too "personal" for some among our good faculty, despite being interesting and well-written.

'Twas a good fight.

What a disappointment, acrimone.  Some other school will snap her up, I hope.

It sounds like you did all you could.  Maybe the battle helped pave the way for some other interesting student in the future, the way older siblings who  are unsuccessful at convincing their parents to permit something sometimes pave the way for the younger siblings, who subsequently succeed with the same arguments.

It was a debate well worth having.  On to the next one.

Guess who got an offer off the wait list on Tuesday, and accepted yesterday afternoon?

I'm chalking this one up in the "political victory" category.

That's great news, acrimone!!  I have high hopes for her, so I'm very happy she's being given the chance she seems to deserve.  The rest is up to her, now.

Thanks for the update!

That is great news, for you and her.

What's the mood on the admissions committee? Is she likely to experience, as was suggested by someone earlier, some sort of backlash for getting in?
