Some folks around here are REALLY alarmist. It isn't that cold; I've felt Ithaca or Southern Ontario winters that were worse than this year's.
The city isn't South Central, for pity's sake. The individuals who usually get mugged are young white male studnets in areas around housing at late hours of the night. Petty thefts are the most prevalent. It is, however, quite a segregated school; certain students stick together.
It's not the most exciting place to live, but most of the faculty are extremely collegial and there are strong resources.

So is there pretty much a consensus that one shouldn't live in the city, but in the burbs?
Anyone know what it's like for a single person?

I lived in the city and have never been attacked, even though I'm a female and under 35. This is within the past five years. I have even walked home after 9 pm from the school and not been harassed (knock wood).
If you are single and want to get a T-T and stick around...umm, slim pickings. Not just slim...emaciated, malnourished, get-on-an-IV-drip anorexic pickings.

The advantage of winter is that it is a great time to get some work done. But recent winters haven't really be cold I've been told. I haven't been there for a while now, but when I was there, I had the impression it was rather safe, nothing to worry about at all. I always walked home late at night - lived a 25 min walk away.
