I vaguely remember this question being answered in the past, but I can't find it. 

A search announcement reads, "Evidence of research and teaching excellence required."  But the same search announcement requests only that a cover letter, cv and letters of reference be sent.  So how is an applicant to take that?  Does the search committee want additional documents NOW that provide some concrete "evidence" of research and teaching effectiveness (writing sample, teaching evaluations, etc.)?  Or does this indicate simply that the cover letter, cv and letters of rec should somehow speak to research and teaching excellence? (That doesn't really seem like hard-and-fast "evidence" to me.)  Or does this indicate that evidence may be sought by the committee at some future date?

I've noticed this odious phrase is much less common than it was 3 years ago (or even from last year). Or am I seeing it less because there are less jobs nowadays?

Maybe SCs got tired of receiving phonebook-sized portfolios filled with every possible bit of teaching and research-related documentation that a stressed and anxious candidate could dream up? Good riddance, in any case.

I had 4 out of 26 apps (15%) ask for this kind of thing this year, 5 out of 30 (16%) last year.

I've had two schools ask for this.  I was able to find out by calling or emailing the SCC - they were both very helpful and clear on what they wanted to see.  Definitely included evals, but will also included different things as well.  They were definitely not asking for quite the same thing though.

(SC members: please let me know if that's considered bad form; I've not been on the market before ...)
