What can you all tell me about Xavier University (Ohio).  What are the students like?  What is the neighborhood like around the U?  Is it possible/desirable for faculty to live near the U?

Any insights would be great!

All I know is that they won the NIT in 1958, back when the NIT meant something.

Marketeer-- Xavier is a Catholic SLAC in a mixed-class neighborhood. There is easy access to the downtown of Cincinnati and its more historic and lovely neighborhoods, such as Clifton. You can live pretty close to the U, and the U is in the process of using eminent domain to expand its campus holdings and gentrify its surroundings some more. I don't know what housing right around the area costs, sorry. I do know that some faculty live in the Clifton, Northside, and College Hill areas.

The grads I know from the school have been uniformly well-educated and well-prepared for careers, but those I know have been predominantly in the humanities. The school has a strong tradition of hiring back its own grads as adjuncts and full-time faculty. There is a crosstown rivalry in basketball with the University of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati itself is an interesting city--lots of conservative politics alongside a push to revitalize the city's cultural holdings. It is home to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, a good symphony and opera, a handful of good restaurants, and a diverse population. Race is a big issue in Cincinnati--look up some info on the riots of a few years ago.

Actually, XU is a comprehensive university with grad programs in a number of areas.

Some people absolutely love Cincinnati, many people, especially single folks, hate it. 

Race IS an enormous issue as is class differences. 

XU itself remains a site of conflicting views on gender, sexuality, and ohter issues.

Consder a move to the city carefully.
