I apologize for this email being long over due. I've been having serious family and financial problems this semester. I've been trying very hard to maintain my work study schedule as well as my classes yet my efforts seem futile. I've been having to raise my nephew because there is no one else with a flexible schedule. I'm hoping that you would be willing to work out a series of alternative assignments with me so that my excessive absences won't destroy my chances of saving my grade point average.
From a student in an Interpersonal Communication class who has attended -- get this -- 3 class periods all semester.
A series of alternative assignments? Apparantly, I'm simply supposed to teach the entire semester to hu, privately, in the remaining 4 weeks of class. Sure, no problem. We'll just forget that it's a course in communication, and difficult to learn anything unless the student is in class to, you know....communicate.
Sigh.

This email's promising subject was "bookstore gave me wrong book"--
Back in the beginning of the semester I went to the book store and got all my books for this class. Little did I know, until today when it finally hit me, that why I was so confused and could not find the specific assignments outlined in the syllabus was that the bookstore gave me [book w/title similar to title of notable text required for course] by [author--name spelled incorrectly]. Of course, this being a [subject] course, I should have realized this sooner. But o well. It seems, however, that the statements made by [author whose name is spelled incorrectly again] were surprisingly similar to [required text's author's] ideas of [subject]. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know because I made a small quote reference to [other author, whose name was still, you guessed it, spelled incorrectly] work in my [assignment].

I knew of a radio DJ that got into trouble talking about ***s one day. Problem was, he was British, and he wasn't talking about gay people. He was using the term as he knew it, to refer to cigarettes. :0
I'm British. A Canadian friend was very shocked when I told her that when we did cross-country running at high school, some people would stop to smoke a ***. I'd be shocked too. It's just like spending an afternoon at the gym, and then scarfing down half a chocolate cake. Maybe there's only a niggardly amount of health information available.... Cheers! My father, a religious Jew, was met at the door of my dormitory by a woman wearing no clothes.
Also, my first term there were two crazy kids making *love* under a tree...they seemed to be oblivious to the fact that they were being watched by about 400 co-eds during their frolic.....
I miss that place.
Would that be, by any chance, a college in the Pacific Northwest? |

I am sorry for the short notice, but today, Monday the 2nd, I went to a Seder in [nearby city] that I was invited to. I have made the decision to stay in [nearby city] tonight because of the hour drive and also I have consumed a sizable amount of wine for the occassion. Anyway I wil be making the trip back to school tomorrow morning and I hope I will be there in time for class, but I will most likely be late. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Four cups of wine are drunk at a seder. I would not like a student driving after drinking four cups of wine. Also, if I had a problem with accommodating a student's religious practices, I would take it up with him directly rather than making snarky comments on an internet forum. But that's just me. Four cups of wine drunk in the evening does not excuse the student from the hour drive in the morning to make it to class. |

Oh, bother.
I was wanting get a head start on studying for Exam #3 today and I was wondering exactly what chapters the test will cover. I'm pretty sure it is [Topic X] through [Topic Y]. If you have any other advice on what to study specifically, or what areas will be more heavily covered on the test, that would be helpful. I haven't done nearly as well as I would have liked to have on the last two tests, so I'm really trying to put a lot of time and effort into this one. I appreciate your time. Thanks again.
The best part is that the student is asking me about an exam that takes place in about 48 hours. So much for the "head start."
