From the TMI department (names changed to protect the "innocent"):

Hi Gradstudent,
Stephanie* and I woke up this morning and discovered to my horror that I developed a very serious disease overnight. We were at student health getting it treated all morning, and that's why we weren't in class today. I know this isn't an excused absence, but I wanted to let you know.

HA HA HA! (splutters, spitting coffee)

This falls into that broad category of student e-mails that feature Information I'd Really Rather Not Know.

Awhile back I posted a poetic, wild rambling email from a student.  Well, she's back.  And this time to tell me how much she likes me. She is now officially my favorite email writer, on so many different levels:

"...Anyway, I meant to say, not to be a suck-up, but just to be honest, that I
am really glad I finally took a class with you! After all these years of
hearing people go on about you. Well, sometimes I
think you are so cool, but still a teacher, that I just don't know what to
say to you, and I never do not know what to say in life ! So that's weird, but
you intimidate me by being a great young cultivated feminine model, so it's
all good don't change it...."

Who knew that cool teacher was an oxymoron?

New student email complaint;

Hey firstname, the (your) class conflicts with class I need, can we manage?  Student name.

To which I wanted to respond;

Yes, I'll manage very well with or without you.

I am not a professor at all, despite what I say.

Your answer really should be:

Dear studentname,

I received your email.  I'm confused -- can we manage what, exactly?

Sincerely,

PTP

Wow, I just got a good one:

Subject: Meeting Canceled?
Auto forwarded by a Rule

Rattus,

I was at your office today for our scheduled meeting at 2:40pm today,
but you were not there.  I'm not sure if you canceled and just forgot
to tell me or if you just forgot to let me know.

Thanks,
Miss xx

Two things, Maria. First, are we friends? You've never asked to call me by my first name, and if you did, I would have never said yes. Next, Uh, sweetie, that meeting was on November 20th, not December 20th. Not only was it posted on our syllabus, but also on an announcement on Blackboard. I also announced it in class a million (or two million) times. And since our semester ended a week ago, how exactly could our meeting have been today?

I'm not sure why this annoys me a bit today, but I secretly wish I could retroactively take off points for this student's carelessness. But then I feel sorry for her...

New student email complaint;

I get this a lot. It is fascinating that these students actually think that: (1) they can pass my course when they'll be missing an entire semester of classes; and/or (2) I'd actually give them private tutorial sessions outside of the class time.
