Psypostdoc, if the student keeps e-mailing you, I would respond with a simple "Dear Phantom Student: Please refer to pages XX of the undergraduate catalog for information on grade appeal procedures." Rinse and repeat as necessary. It's tempting in situations like these not to respond at all, but I'd give a minimal response just as a CYA measure.

"Dear Dr. Mended_drum:

It has come to my attention that you have an attendance policy for our class of which I did not know because I did not read all of the syllabus before now.  I object to this policy as it will hurt my grade and I want to protest that to you in very strong words.  This has happened to me many times before that these policies exist and I do not read about them until I have skipped to many classes which is why I am so upset that this has happened to me again.  It feels like all the teachers at this school are out to get me because everyone has the policies and it always sticks it to my grade in the end.  So in this case I would hope that you would think of me the student and not use this policy on me since its been used so many times before already in other classes with other teachers.  Its just not fair to keep it up on me.

Student X"

My response:

"Dear Student X:

I was unaware that you were still registered for my course, as you have not attended class since the second day and you no longer appear on the course roll.  In other circumstances, I would explain to you that, since you know that many professors require you to attend class, you should have changed your behavior so that attendance policies have no effect on your grade.  However, in this case, you don't have any points for the course, so it will not be possible to impose any penalties.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mended_drum"

Student:

"Thank you very much!  I will forward your message to my other professor whom I think his class is the one I'm actually taking.  Hopefully, he will cut me some slack to."

Ha! That's hilarious!
Two reading comprehension fails!
Plus a writing fail!
Plus an attendance fail!

Wow.

Wow.  Mr.B and I both had a good belly laugh over that, Mended_Drum.  If your post hasn't already made it to the HoF, I'm putting it there.

Holy cow, MD!  I first read that email in the HOF post, but had to come here to see it with my very own eyes, in all of its glory.

If I could still get free access to Xtranormal, I'd make a movie out of that one!

Oh, come on, MD.  You've GOT to be making this one up, aren't you?  Please?  SERIOUSLY?!?

This has happened to me many times before that these policies exist and I do not read about them until I have skipped to many classes which is why I am so upset that this has happened to me again.

When I read this, I had a visual of a student leisurely skipping to his classes.

I, too, had a good belly laugh over this exchange.

I'm just stunned at the level of cluelessness embodied in

Yep, it's definitely not fair to keep telling you that this is going to happen and then for you to whine about it happening.  Someone should fix that, perhaps by reading syllabi and attending class.

MD,
Another vote for "wow."  I sense a truly magnificent grade complaint email coming your way when the course concludes.

No, I checked.  The student did indeed drop the class.  He just "forgot" which class he dropped and which one he'd just been skipping.

I'm waiting for my colleague's reaction; he's less patient with this sort of thing than I am.

I have to feel sorry for a kid like that. It reminds me of the Dunning-Kruger article and Errol Morris's recent series on cluelessness for the New York Times. The kid has absolutely no concept of learning from past mistakes. He can identify the mistake but not the change in behavior that would prevent future instances. Kind of amazing.

Dr. Dancia:

I was not in class yesterday and have consequently hit a snag in completing today's assignment.  Any suggestions?

Today's assignment that was due 2 hours before you sent this message? It did not occur to you to look at the assignment BEFORE class and perhaps ask this question during class, or come to my office after class? Need I remind you that we watched a movie in class yesterday, and therefore did not discuss this assignment, that was actually discussed last week in class?

Nope, as a matter of fact, I do not have any suggestions.

In modifying Polly's suggestion, I wrote back to the student that it wasn't clear whether they meant the assignment due that day or the the assignment for the next day. I never heard back from the student.
