This just in:

hey professor and [insert TA's first name here],
why did i get a 50 out of 75 on my essay for the midterm.  i studied and followed direction and you said if we follow directions we get rewarded with good scores.  please change my score to 75 because i followed directions and wrote an essay.

Yeah, I'm gonna get right on that.

That is classic - please update with any follow-up emails or conversations.

Will do.  I might let my TA field this one.  Why should I have all the fun?

That was going to be my recommendation. No need to be selfish when it comes to dealing with such students!

Plus, your TA could be in need of a good laugh.  Please do share the wealth.

This was sent at 11:30 PM the night before the paper is due:

"I have not been able to get a copy of <the movie we watched in class> for the paper due tomorrow. i was wondering if someone had it or could tell me a brief overview of the movie?"

Let me think about that for a second......no.

So, student didn't come to class. I wonder if student even  knows the movie was watched in class?

Oh student knows - we watch movies every few weeks in class. This is the third one.

It gets better. The film is currently not checked out according to the library website.

Not exactly an e-mail, but since this is from a freewriting exercise in class I figured this thread is the closest one.

The mood in class yesterday had been restless, and I couldn't quite read it, so at the end of class I told the students this and asked them to write for a few minutes as a check-in; I wanted to see what the mood was and if anything I'd done had caused it. One student (who's actually one of the brightest in class) wrote:

"I've been really focused all week with homework, but I get distracted in class because it seems like the only time I've had to sit down and rest."

Hey, glad I can provide a nap break from all that stressful work you have to do in other places!

I particularly like the implication that the student will settle for the overview, then fake the paper.
If s/he was going to do that, why not get the synopsis off the interweb machine?

Because that requires many more clicks and much more effort than sending the mass email to the class.

"With or without the paper I need a progress report as soon as possible.  This is urgent!  It is for a sorority and we have a deadline!"

Writes the student who hasn't turned in half the homework, either of the two major papers (although she is "certain" she turned in one of them), and is always tardy for class, including on the day when she was supposed to produce the progress report form.  Good thing she's working on the popularity angle!  (oxenfree can use exclamation points too!)

This just in:

"Hi Professor Peppergal.  I would like to take your Basketweaving 105 class, but the schedule says that it's full.  Is there any way you could let me in to the class?  Sincerely, Student-Who-Can't-Read-The-Schedule."

My reply:

"Dear SWCRTS,

You seem to be looking at the Spring 2009 schedule.  I am on leave, and am not teaching any courses in Spring 2010.

Best,
Dr. Peppergal"

And the student's reply:

"Oh, well can I get in to your Basketweaving 105 class?"

So should I just send the same thing I sent last time?  Or does it need more snark?
