Hello, I think you are my advisor and I would like to come in on Wednesday at 1 to register for my spring semester classes. Thank you

That's the e-mail, in full.  The student hasn't looked to see that I am not available at 1:00 on Wednesdays.  Our office hours and class times are available online from the same place the student probably got my e-mail address.  Oh, well.

I asked a student to send me three times when he will be available to meet he responded:

Wednesday:after  7:20pm
Friday: after  1:00pm
Saturday: after  1:00pm

The thing is I don't believe he was being passive aggressive. Just clueless.

I'm laughing so loud my dept. chair just poked her head in my office to see if I'm okay.

This morning I received a really similar email from a student I've never met before.  However, when I responded that I was not available on the weekends, he offered to meet me at a local pub on Friday evening for his advising session. That's going to happen...sheesh.

I (finally) snapped at a pair of students in class today, because they were whispering and laughing at something (as they often do).  Shortly after class ended, I got this:

Dr. Canuckois,

I would like to apologize for my actions during class today.  It was both rude and disruptive for Other Student and I to hold side conversations, relevant to the discussion or not, while discussion was proceeding during class.  I would like to assure you that I did not intend to undermine your authority in class and that such an occurrence will not happen again.  I would also like to acknowledge the fact that I chose to enroll in and attend this class, and by said choice I agreed to the code of conduct that <university> and <college> expects of its students; thus my actions were completely out of line.

See you in class Monday,
Polite and Well-Mannered Young Person

Student was probably told they'd go to Hell if they didn't confess their sins. When I worked at a conservative southern university, I had quite a few of these "fervently apologetic" students sending me elaborately written notes after they were caught misbehaving. I'm pretty sure they write off templates given to them by their local pastors...

I've had several students tell me they've been arrested and/or have to go to court to face charges seemingly without batting an eye. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

Yep.

One student informed me that he didn't buy books the first couple weeks of classes because he had spent the money on his lawyer.

One student has already asked to reschedule her final, which is 6 weeks from now, because she has to be a defendant in court during the proper time.  She was grateful to be allowed to reschedule a 1430 final to 0800 on the last day of finals week (I have three sections of the same class so her choices were limited to the regularly scheduled times for the other two sections) so I suspect that she is not just playing for sympathy.

I won't be able to come to class tomorrow because I have a really bad case of tonsillitis or strep, not sure which. I am extremely contagious so I'm not supposed to be around people until I start my antibiotics.

I am glad you have no clue what you have but you know that it is extremely contagious.

Speaking of legal issues...

I got an email today not from a student, but from the campus police informing me that they've been trying to track down one of my students to "question her about an unrelated issue" (unrelated to what?  My class, I guess?).

They've informed me that they'll be busting into my class tomorrow to take her in.  I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to tell them that she only comes to class about half the time anyway.  *shrug*

Let us know how it goes!

I had this happen one semester.  A uniformed officer came twice to my class looking for a student, but he was absent both times.  A couple of years later I was looking at the local sex-offender registry online (at the urging of one of my more paranoid neighbors), and there was his picture and a brief description of his conviction.  Swell.

I actually sort of regret that I ever looked at the registry, because all it did was show me how many convicted rapists and child-molesters live between my house and my children's school.   It was not at all reassuring.
