We can get into silly arguments about who's an 'evangelical', my dear. Let us for the sake of argument say an evangelical is one who says he is one, or a church that says it is (this is obviously not true, but let us say it is). On that basis alone, it is clear from church history that the vast majority of evangelical Churches have not observed 'Holy Week', perhaps with the exception of Easter itself. Sadly, too many 'evangelicals' are deeply ignorant of church history, which, amongst other errors, renders them susceptible to proselytization for ignorance on internet chat boards.

This, from last Thursday:
"I will not be attending class today as I really really feel the need to watch Daisuke Matsuzaka's first MLB game with the Red Sox. Hope class goes well."
An unusually polite email, especially since none of the other students who boycotted my class that day bothered to send even a cockamamie excuse! I can hardly be upset because first, it appears the student had a deep-seated, almost pathological compulsion, and second, closed with the chirpy equivalent of "have a nice day!"

Was your class boycotted or was that a figure of speech?

Never underestimate the loyalties/obsessions of the Red Sox Nation. I once helped organize an alcohol awareness program for student-athletes that had mandatory attendance (to help meet an NCAA requirement). We set up the event months in advance, but when the date came around, it coincided with game 5 of a Red Sox/Yankees playoff series. Every student in the room (and half of the coaches) were like dogs straining at their leashes, waiting for the thing to be over. If there hadn't been penalties hanging over their heads (for both players and coaches), I doubt any of them would have showed up.

Ah, see.... you should always have the potential playoff schedule in hand when planning these things. October is just a bad time to do anything. ;)

This along with some issues in a different thread remind me of my theory of the work week. I'm sure I've written this before. Nobody likes to do anything on Monday. Let's pitch it. No assignments. No exams. No expectations. So, what's Tuesday? The new "Monday". Eh. It's gone for reasons written above. Nobody likes to do anything on Friday. Too much daydreaming about the weekend. No assignments. No exams. No expectations. It's gone. So, what's Thursday? The new "Friday". Buh-bye. Wednesday is the only good day to get any work done. (assuming it's a Wednesday when this is done) So it's Wednesday, and it's already noon. Get busy! Oh, and the weekend works for similar reasons. Sunday sucks because people spend all day moaning about how they need to go back to work on Monday. Two good days of the week. Wednesday for working and Saturday for relaxing. Every other day sucks. Whatever else I do or say here, friend, I never have called my interlocutors either 'odious' or 'toxic'. Indeed, this sort of thing tends to represent a major distinction between liberals and conservatives, whether in the religious and/or political sense. Conservatives tend to see libs as misguided and in need of further enlightenment, whereas libs tend to see conservatives as fundamentally evil, 'odious', 'toxic', and the like.

Kaysixteen, everything everyone says here on these fora (or at least it SEEMS like everything) seems to make you so angry and to solicit such nasty remarks from you. Why do you keep reading and posting? I'm not trying to be mean--I'm really interested.
For me, it's not worth it--life is too short. If stuff aggravates me at every turn, I walk away and leave it alone.
I only hope you're happier in your real life than you come across here; it would be very sad if you aren't.

Oh this is almost too easy: Glenn Beck: Beck has likened both Gore and his Academy Award-winning movie, An Inconvenient Truth, to Nazi propaganda. He frequently criticizes Clinton, calling her the "Antichrist" and a "stereotypical b*tch," Ann Coulter: In her book, High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton (Regnery, 1998) that the issue was "whether to impeach or assassinate" President Clinton. Mark Levin: Mark Levin, host of WABC's The Mark Levin Show and Landmark Legal Foundation president, why he referred to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as "Stretch." Levin replied: "You could bounce a dime off her cheeks. The woman has had so many face-lifts." Rush Limbaugh: "[Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales is] under fire by white liberal racists in the Senate."
