trying hard to ruin your chances of graduating

« Reply #660 on: March 13, 2007, 12:47:42 PM »

If I was feeling particularly irritated, I would contact that doctor's office and see if it is legitimate. If not, I would offer to send a copy to the doctor. Doing things like that have legal ramifications.

I've done this.  The doctor's office can't give you any information for legal reasons (ie: whether the student did see the doctor or what illness they have), but they CAN tell you whether the note is legitimate or not.

The only time I've done this is when a failing student missed a midterm.  It seemed suspicious but turns out hu did have a legitimate reason.

But since your student's name is written in their own hand and the doctor's name and address is stamped I would definitely make a point to call the doc's office.  It could be the doc has no idea his/her prescription pad is missing or being used in such a manner.  It could get him/her in a big legal mess.  I'd let him/her know as a courtesy.

This just in, not from a student but from a total stranger.

Quote
Dear Miss Insensitive,

I'm studying Accounting and Economics at the Technical University in Bavaria (Germany). My major is Controlling and I'm specializing in International Accounting. I'm writing my diploma thesis while doing an internship with Bavarian Company in your town. The subject of my thesis is "The Chances and Risks for Bavarian Company due to the change from US-Gaap to IFRS regarding the treatment of Research and Development Costs".

After doing some research in your university library, I noticed that most of the books are too old to use for describing actual situations today. The e-books are newer and helpful, but not enough. The references I need for my thesis is a list of literature with around 50 - 75 items.

Not knowing how to find more literature, especially books, I want to ask you if you could provide me with information on how your students find literature for their research papers.

Thank you in advance,

Hans

I don't know this person nor do I research in this area and he sounds like he needs basic research skills (and some knowledge that books aren't going to give him the info he needs, but journal articles might). My response:

Quote
Hans,

My students use the usual library resources as well as the ABIinform and Business Source Primier type of databases.  If you know of materials you want, but the library doesn't carry, try ordering them through inter-library loan.

As I neither teach nor research in financial or international accounting, I'm not sure what other information I have that can assist your search.  If you have more specific questions, please email again.

Sincerely,

Dr. Insensitive

Ok, I've done more than my duty to a total stranger who wants me to do his research, yes?

His complete reply:

Quote
Ok doesn't really help except the inter library loan thing, but first I have to find literature that I want...

well... excuse me!

Hmmm... (ignoring for the moment the complete inappropriateness of his request) this is a remarkably smooth effort at communication in English, for a German! And this one:

..really sounds American. What if Herr Hans is partially educated in America? And it really is *just* American students?

Tonight's gem:

Here's the complete email:

Quote
hey i just got done with a baseball game and i was wondering if there was any way i could postpone me taking the test tomorrow so i will have some more time to study. i am really behind and right now i have 3 test to take tomorrow and i just dont see how i am going to be able to learn all the stuff for all of them good enough to do good on the exams. if you want me to take the test tomorrow i understand and will be there. please email me back as soon as possible. thanks!

My response:

Quote
David,

I'm sorry but if I give you special treatment that other students do not get, I could
get the school in trouble with the NCAA.

Dr. I.

His reply:

Quote
ok see you tomorrow can you email me the answers to the practice test? i did get i chance to get them the other day you were going a little fast.

I gave them a practice exam in class yesterday, then went over every problem... He apparently didn't bother to write any of that down, not even check figures.

My response:

Quote
David,

I'm at home and don't have a copy of the practice exam here. If you can send me the description of a particular problem for which you want a solution, I'll attempt to recreate a solution from memory.

Dr. I.

I suspect he's too lazy to type in a whole problem.  I really don't have these files here, they are on the office computer.

And, I'm right, because his next email a few minutes later is:

Quote
ok thanks i wll try to contact someone in the class or something. thanks see you tomorrow.

Lovely, eh? I had numerous athletes last term, with no problems. However, several profs said the baseball players are the problem children. I had no baseball players last term.  This term I have players from several sports but baseball and track are the two that are disappointing me this term...

Yeah the baseball players are a special breed.  I had a student who refused to ask his coach if he could miss the last half hour of one baseball practice for a mandatory meeting "because I made a commitment to the team and I can't go back on my promise."  The kid never played in a game.  Father even got involved and said that since there had been a picture of a baseball scene on our website,  we obviously felt baseball was just as important as the academic mission of the college.

Other athletes have argued vehemently that they should get credit towards graduation for team participation "because I put so much time and effort into my sport."  We are a small liberal arts college where students only do sports because they love it.  I admire their dedication and they obviously are not in it for the glory since sports are not a big deal on campus.  Most people don't even know when the games are happening.  Frisbee golf has a bigger following than baseball.

Okay, I admit up front that I know little about sports and have no interest in them.  But I have to ask:  What in tarnation is frisbee golf???  Are there clubs involved?  Little holes just barely bigger than the frisbee?  (Do players use a standard-size frisbee, or a special small golfball-size frisbee?)  And is watching it as incredibly boring as watching a traditional golf game?

The "frisbees" - called disks - are more or less "normal" size, but some are smaller and they have different weights to them so they go different lengths when thrown.  You throw them at chainlink tubs.

Frisbee golf or disc golf doesn't usually have spectators but more students play frisbee golf than play baseball or other organized sports at my school.

Frisbee golf is where you hit targets with the frisbee.  Targets may be trees, trash cans, a chalk circle on the side of a building.  The player with the lowest number of tosses needed to hit all the targets wins.  It has been around since I was in high school and that was a long time ago.  When I googled it, apparently it is called disc golf on wikipedia  and they have invented baskets that can be used in place of the informal targets I mentioned.  The baskets are ugly, I prefer the natural targets and I think they even have special shoes that have been invented just for frisbee golf athletes.

I am sorry I insulted the baskets then.  We have an organized (as much as anything is organized on our campus) frisbee golf team known as the Braineaters.  I think this is the traditional name for such teams because I have heard of others.   I wonder what the mascot looks like?

Sandals could be in one of your swim bags or bike bags or I still think there could be a desk that is hiding them (other thread reference).
