Prospective student to my major sent me this in August 2008: declaration of self statement:
By focusing my area of studies in women studies as a my displin spled lik this major i hope to attain a better understanding of who i am as a woman, who women were before me, and what women are hoping to obtain in the future. Also as a my discipline spelled correctly major i hope to gain a better knowledge of the world around me and how i as an individual can help people within this world.
classes i was able to get into:
thanks so much! student in lower case name My response: Hi Student, Would you mind please re-writing this statement in proper English punctuation and spelling? Thanks, Dr. Fannie Next time I hear from her is mid-November, when she writes this: Dear Dr. Fannie,
So sorry to finally be getting back to you about this. Unfortunately when I read this e-mail I was not in a positive emotional state. I am sensitive about criticism to my writing since it is not very good, even if it is in e-mail form. I take full responsibility for being so immature about the issue. I would like to apologize to you for being so immature about the issue. I have since then received help about those issues. I am in a much happier place in my life now. If you still have space in your schedule, I would enjoy very much to be an advisee of yours. Here is the statement you requested:
Through focusing my area of studies in Women Studies as a my discipline major I hope to attain a better understanding of who I am as a woman. I would also like to know about who women were before me as well as where women are hoping to be in the future. Also as a my discipline major I hope to gain a better knowledge of the world around me. Finally as a my discipline major I hope to learn how I as an individual can help people around me and throughout this world.
Also, I have spoken with Dr. Women's Studies and she has approved me for a Women’s Studies Independent Study student. I am also hoping that once I am approved, I can register for the following classes:
Thank you so much for you time. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Whoa! Looks like she found a fellow student/friend who writes well to compose the email for her.

Student email address musicn--ger.com
I'm Black American
Out of curiosity, is the student also African-American? Perhaps the point was that the whole email consisted of a declaration of group identity? Could we get a little context, please? Paging the context fairy. Stat.

For natural causes, that might work. I'm not sure anything works on a partially digested fairy.

With the Kahlua fairy around, do you really think any of us are going to care that much about the context fairy?

I have only just started following this thread, so perhaps this has been mentioned a gazillion times already. But did you all know that one of the columnists at CHE mines this thread for a regular column? http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/article/3515/3-more-favorite-student-e-mails-to-professorsI'm just a tiny bit curious to know if he gets *paid* to produce that column. If so, I think you all should be getting some compensation. Or perhaps (*gasp*) he might be One of Us??! In any case, I do sometimes forget that this is a thoroughly public forum -- read by our colleagues, but also, of course, perhaps our students' parents. I'm not wagging my finger at anyone -- I love this thread! -- I just thought some of you might be interested to know this.

I'm not sure that poster was a troll. I checked his other two posts and he seemed more clueless about normative behavior than anything else. Well, if you want to feel better, I sent a lovely PM explaining how much we love newbies and how we like them even better with certain norms obeyed. If troll he be, then I just gave some great chow.
