Just received this:

I was curious if we're suppose to be reading Dr. Jackal and Mr.Hyde already?
I was talking to my fellow classmate and he said that he didn't think so. However, I thought it would be a good idea to ask you anyway!

The syllabus, of course, clearly states that we're starting J&H on Monday.  Plus, I reminded my students in class twice this past week that we're moving on to a new book and that they need to be prepared for Monday.

Oy.  Freshmen.

"We're starting it Monday, so I hope you will have read it by then.  And no, you'd better not try to fake it by watching that movie about Extraordinary Gentlemen and hoping that will do it for you, because it won't."

Are we talking Carlos the Jackal, or the minor league hockey team?

Perhaps that's where the confusion lies.

You can never know everything, and part of what you do know will always be wrong. Perhaps even the most important part. A portion of wisdom lies in knowing this. A portion of courage lies in going on anyway.

That's just the very tip of the confusion iceberg, I fear.

The confusion iceberg... Can I steal that? I like the ring of it and the mental picture.

This is actually a good one... to combat the bazillion not so good ones that pile up in my inbox.  Background: I live in the part of the US that is not at all tropical. Not even close. But yet, we had a tropical storm blow thru last week. Several hundred thousand households are stil without power. Still!  Class had homework due last week. No notice from any student (phone call, note taped to door, etc) that they were without power.  This is an intro statistics course.

I received this in the online class site assignment submission section (paraphrased and slightly modified)

Hi Prof Geek

This is <student's SO>. We are still without power, so I printed out a copy of the assignment for <student> who did the work. I then took it to my office where I scanned it and submitted it. I hope that is ok.

Thanks,

Student & Student SO.

I am always amazed when student figures out something like this - without whining or throwing their hands up in desparation. They just do it. Made me very happy. And of course I accepted it. Student did some fairly complex calculations all by hand. And showed every step. And the student got a 100%.

The great thing is that it seemed so matter-of-fact. Essentially-

"Here's my SO's homework."

Awesome.
