Knowing whether one is pregnant or not is not an emergency.

Says you.  : )

Why do you think men call the EPT the "Emergency Pregnancy Test?"

Speaking of TMI from students, one of mine explained that she was out last week because she had a miscarriage.  Really, I don't need to know that much, but I'm glad that she seemed okay.

If I were a 19-year old student who thought she might be pregnant, I'd probably skip class too in order to find out for certain.  I'd be frantic!

Eh- If you were that frantic, you'd have dragged yourself out of bed earlier in the day and did a home test before any of your professors even arrived on campus.

Like I said, I wouldn't want the information about why the student had missed class...just that it was one of her three absences (no reason necessary).  But if I were to find out that a panicked 19-year old student woke up, couldn't stand waiting for her period any longer and took a home pregnancy test, got a positive, and then ran to the student health center to confirm (unnecessary in this day and time of super-accurate tests, but that's what a scared 19-year old would do, hoping that there had been a mistake), I'd be pretty sympathetic, even if it meant she missed an exam.  Poor thing should not have got herself in that pickle, but accidents happen frequently, and she's not going to be acting rationally in that situation.  I'm sure everyone will say that she needs to learn how to accept the consequences of her actions in the real world, but I just don't have it in me to be less than compassionate in that situation.

The exchange on pregnancy reminded me of an episode when I was an undergraduate. I was working as a TA for a professor (undergrads were allowed to do this, but it was really a glorified position as a copier and collector of bluebooks).

A student in the class flunked the mid-term. Really, flunked it. She seemed pretty smart. It was odd.

Then she came to see Professor X. It turned out that she'd been to the doctor, discovered a lump, and had to have a lumpectomy at the ripe old age of 19. She showed up for the exam, but failed spectacularly because...her mind was on other things!

He told her that if the final was better, he'd count that more. At the end of the term, he issued an A-, which reflected her work the rest of that semester, and that was that. No harm to her, he thought it was fair, and I filed it away for future reference.

So, for posterity: what a guy. I think about him when I make exceptions for people who deserve it.

Now...back to our regular programming.

katherineparr's post reminded me of a story: cheater caught red-handed with the itsy bitsy cheat sheet. I demanded it, kicked her out and assigned her a failing grade for the exam and told her that the incident would be reported to the appropriate offices at the school. She made an appt with me and reminded me that at the beginning of the semester she had spoken to me about her recent surgery to remove a brain tumor and due to the subsequent treatments she had memory difficulties. I did remind her that it was her responsibility to speak with me about alternative methods of testing, etc. And that cheating was not the answer.
But I will never forget how I felt realizing that this young woman was dealing with an issue while I could barely wrap my head around the concept of having a such a serious medical condition.

Back to the thread: Dear Prof, Where is the Metropolitan Museum of Art? (Assignment given four weeks ago. Due Monday am).

Does this new vomiting/diarrhea/pregnancy trend represent a decline in dying grandmothers?

Does this signal an improvement in the overall health of older women or have we finally run out of grandmothers?

Now that you mention it, maybe so. Actually, I told my students at our first class meeting that they should know that when faculty get emails about deceased grandmothers, they laugh - then I showed them the website with the dead grandmothers "study." I then explained that if they truly did have a loss or an emergency in their family, I definitely did NOT want to laugh at them, so they needed to know how to handle it, and I told them how to reach the appropriate person in the Dean's office. So far I've had one student with a legitimate, verified very ill mother (who recovered) - and lots of diarrhea.

I thought you were some misguided student who had wandered onto the CHE fora unaware, until I saw that you had been around for a bit.

Oh, you're going to have fun with this student. I can see it now.

I received an email last semester from one of my internet students that was unexceptional--except for the email address, which was hotty69er@somemailservice.com. The icky thing is that this student was a middle aged married guy with children. I think he accidentally emailed me from the account he uses to troll the internet for underaged sex partners or something.  I answered him as if nothing were amiss, except that I began my message "Dear Hotty69er."

OMG, I almost wet myself. You people do have a sense of humor!

I had a female student email me with an address like SexKitten###@yahoo.com.  She wasn't anything special to look at though.

Ok, I had to post one. Boy, I had to do some digging to find it. Here it is: If you can understand it, let me know!

the thought of not passing is haunting my mind as work on the assignment, should I throw in the towel? Should I just fail and pay for the course and take again. To tell you the true I was pour equipped in understand what I read it is like listen to talk in a different language it is beautiful and all but there is no meaning.

I know exactly what the student is asking.  It's the same question they ask here.

From one of my students:

"I am really going to try to make it to class tomorrow, but right now my stomach is very upset and I have diarrhea. And it is not because my work is not done."

TMI, but hilarious!

this was picked up by CNN a few weeks back.  Best part starts about half way through...

That video is brilliant!  Thanks for posting!
