Are we there yet?

« Reply #2775 on: January 22, 2008, 10:51:56 PM »

I've recovered from being mildly stunned.  I called my chair to whom, it turns out, this student is well known.  It turns out that she only wanted to take a particular professor for this course and has been trying to get into that section for five semesters.  She thought that as a senior she'd get in this spring, but unpaid library and parking fines sent her to the bottom of the pile for electronic registration.  There are, in fact, four other courses that will satisfy the requirement, several of them at times open to her.  But she's trying to convince the administration that seniors should not have to take courses at 8 or 8:30am if they don't want to.

I sent her a quick note that I can't do what she's asking, but that I am offering the course this summer; taking it then would allow her to "walk" with her class at graduation.  Her response, "That's not possible, as a trip to Europe is going to be my graduation present.  I really regret attending this school.  I was told that it was known for individual attention to students, but everyone seems determined to ruin my senior year.  Don't expect any donations from me in the future!"  I did not reply.

Wow!  I hope she doesn't ever expect to use that degree because I can't imagine she will take well to any job that requires <whisper> work</whisper>.

I'm a little surprised that she didn't pull the customer service "I paid for this, why can't I get exactly what I want" lever.  It seems to be right up her alley.

I've changed my mind. Play along, and FAIL HER! Don't let her get her trip to Europe!! (Oh how I wish you could do this).

Geez - what a whiney spoiled (trust fund?) brat.  She has plenty of options.  Her predicament is her fault.  But then again, people like that generally feel that they shouldn't be subject to the same rules as everyone else.

So if I'm following right, the basic message here is "I don't want to take an early morning class, and I don't want to take a summer course and ruin my summer trip, and you suck for not helping me lie about taking your class."  Notice that your integrity is worth less than her being able to sleep in during her last term. Wow, what an unlikeable precious Snotleigh.

Grinnellns, I assume your school has an honor code?  It would seem that her original email is requesting your complicity in academic dishonesty.  After seeing her second email, I would be sorely tempted to forward the first message on to the appropriate office.

Wow, all this from a second-semester senior.  Astounding entitlement and open selfishness from someone who should be acting like an adult.  Commonplace nowadays?  This sounds like something a prep school senior might well write.

How long does she have to register for a course for this semester?  Or will she blow the add date and have mummy and daddy complain to the dean about how she wasn't allowed to register for her class by the mean ol' prof?

At this point, she's out of my hands.  I'm pretty certain she'll end up in one of the 8am sections and whine about it.  Again, this is really not like our students.  We get some pretty spoiled students sometimes, but most of that melts away after the freshman year.  Naturally, she's proposing violating the Honor Code, but I have no desire to prolong our relationship.

If she did this over email, I'd turn her over to your chair, dean or whomever handles matters of academic honesty.  This snot deserves to have the full weight of whatever's coming to her.

I also agree with K16 that this smells like prep school kid.

Dear Dr. Vap,

I was wondering if you would sign me in to your class, [Advanced Blah Blah].  I tried to register earlier but the class was full, now my friend who was in your class told me he is going to drop so I thought you could sign me in.  I took [Intro to Blah Blah] and got an A, and I also took [Special Topic in Blah Blah] and got a D (but not because I didn't understand it! just because I never turned in the big final paper) so I think I could do well in your class.

Sincerely,
Ethelberthu

I love how dear Ethel tries to impress me by telling me that her poor grade in a previous course is based on irresponsibility and/or laziness, but most definately not because she "didn't get it."

Yay! I got one!  Except I'm supposed to feel depressed after reading this...

[No salutation]
i wish i could say i had some good news and some bad news, but instead i have two pieces of bad news:

1.  it totally slipped my mind to tell you this last week, but i won't be here friday.  i have to go home this weekend for my school's homecoming.  sorry!!  i'm leaving thursday afternoon.  does that mean i'll need to practice double for the next lesson?

2.  how tragic would it be if i couldn't go to the thing on march 1st?  :-/  i totally forgot about this b/c i don't have it written down in my planner, but i'm supposed to be going camping that weekend.  if you need me to stay that's totally fine.  and i still might stay anyway.  i have to check into everything.  but just wondering how you felt about that

i am so sorry.  i hope this email didn't depress you too much...  :)  have a wonderful night

I just can't stop laughing at the thought of the "thing" on Mar. 1st.  Apparently it's so unimportant to the Sprite that he or she doesn't even remember what it is.

Hi Ox,
An emergency came up at home and i live far away for school so i cant make it for the exam review [an extra tutorial session i gave them to get drilled on content coz they all bombed the first test]. Also, I was supposed to hand in my assignment in class today and because I cant make it to school I wont be able to do that. Is there anyway I could hand it in some other time that is convenient to you? Thank you for understanding and let me know if something is possible. I apologize for this last minute notice.
A Student

Then about 15 minutes after the tutorial ended, she wanders past me in a hall, totally oblivious and blabbing on her cell. Now she "cannot get the assignment to attach to email" (after I saw her, I emailed to tell her to email today and drop hard copy tomorrow). Nipping this in the bud. Told her to ask me straight up if she needs an extra evening to finish in future. I'd rather deal with a late paper than a pile of bs.

I wish I'd thought of this reply a long time ago to Grinnelln's student:

"Dear student: So, if I plan to fail you because you are not taking and therefore not learning the material covered in sophomore-level course even though you are doing the work for my junior-level course, and I don't tell you this, that's not lying by your own definition, right?  So there would be nothing wrong if I, hypothetically, were to do that?  You would have no complaint about the failing grade, right?"

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

The girl who emailed about the emergency keeping her 'far away' and using this as an excuse to not attend the tutorial and not pass in the assignment was lying.  Shouldn't she be punished?
