Good evening, all! Rum and Diet is my elixir of choice tonight. I usually don't drink on worknights, but I got a bit of bad news today and so I'm making an exception. (The bad news, by the way, is just a flash in the pan that won't matter in another few months. But my pride is hurt).

Ah, BEER WARS!!!!

It seems that drinkers are more territorial about beer than wine.  Cost vs. taste vs. well, cost.  Is beer a commodity, a necessity, or a luxury?  (Right: cost vs. yaddah, yaddah).

So, when do beer drinkers cross the line from drinking beer for beer's sake to selecting beer based on superior points of quality?

Is one willing to sacrifice quantity for quality?  Is one willing to splurge for expensive beer to impress friends (wine drinkers do this all the time), or save the good stuff for one's self?

Is high priced beer a status symbol like trophy reds in the wine world?

I think I will mix a drink to ponder all of these thoughts..............<ice clinks into double old-fashioned glass>

Drinking wine, playing music (Tom Verlaine for you hipsters out there), trying to gird myself for an advising marathon tomorrow...

I can hear it now:

All during one of my research days.

When they can afford it, basically.  I'm trying to be cheap right now, so I'm not buying the expensive stuff.

Quantity isn't much of an issue; a six-pack usually lasts me two weeks or more.  And I don't worry about status symbols much; I have beer I like to drink.

I've actually gone from always wanting to try new craft beers to just sticking with cheap, satisfying, light beer.  I did recently hear about Duvel, a Belgian beer I want to try.  Has anyone seen the new Sam Adams beer, Utopias, 200 dollars a bottle?

Tonight, I had one rum punch and now I'm having a few beers.  I'm celebrating "vacation."

I'm celebrating hipgeek's vacation, too. Ours hasn't started yet.

I'm going to be making a vodka gimlet tonight. Never had one, but just finished listening to an audiobook in which they are mentioned approximately five billion times and hence am giving in to the power of suggestion.

Tough week.

Glad it's over.

What's in a vodka gimlet? How did it turn out?

Vodka and Rose's Lime Juice. Some people put soda in, but I do not. Mine seems unusually tart.

That does sound good, but I'd probably add seltzer and stick with plain vodka. I'm not into anything too tart.  (I'm enough of a tart myself, you know).

 Enjoy!

I just got back from a postdoc happy hour.

There were pitchers of an Alaska Smoked Porter going around.

While I like bacon, I'm not sure I enjoy my beer smelling like bacon.

That didn't seem to stop me from drinking two pints though (hey, if someone else is buying, I'll drink whatever!)

I believe there was an attempt to set rules about what constituted plastered (and I assume also by what means); but I say, why not?

Sam Adams Winter Lager (not as good as last year, though).

Sipping the last of a bottle of good shiraz a friend gave me, in between licking various wounds sustained at work over the past week.
