Dixie' Lyrics
I wish I was in the land of cotton, Old times there are not forgotten, look away, look away, look away, Dixie land. In Dixie Land where I was born in, Early on one frosty mornin' look away, look away, look away, Dixie land.
I wish I was in Dixie, hooray! hooray! In Dixie Land I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie, Away, away, away down south in Dixie, Away, away, away down south in Dixie!

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on. (Chorus) Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps, They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on. Chorus I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: "As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel, Since God is marching on." Chorus He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat: Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on. Chorus In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, (sometimes "let us live to make men free") While God is marching on. Chorus (The sixth verse is often omitted, and a common variant changes "soul of Time" to "soul of wrong", and "succour" to "honor".) He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is wisdom to the mighty, He is succour to the brave, So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave, Our God is marching on. Chorus

OK, here's a question I have going back to the OP. Did the arguers ever talk to the professor in question about it? Has anyone? Because all of this argument about intent or effect, behind the person's back, is somewhat unsavory. Perhaps the professor in question has used those portraits and flags to promote a lively discussion with the people who enter the office. It certainly is a lively discussion here. I would presume that he/she has made a study of these historical figures, and one could learn some new insights from him/her.
Any display of the flag is racist? I'm not sure. I would want someone (any sociologists out there? any? like 5000?) to TALK to people flying the flag, and find out why they fly it, what they intend to convey, what they mean to convey about their feelings toward african americans. Or are they just trying to convey general anti-socialism, clannish-ness, and insularity?
Me, I decorate my office with race numbers. Pure vanity.

I am a History Prof with pictures adorning my office walls, pictures that some might take offensive, but I consider historical. I don't tell the Sociologists what to put on their walls and they don't tell me what to put on mine.

I'm a history professor. Among the pictures on my wall is a poster that shows examples of slave shackles and whips. The poster is hanging there as an educational device, but I suppose the stupid crusading professor described in the first post would call me a racist who supports slavery.
One of my colleagues teaches a popular course on Nazi Germany, and he has a German WW2 poster on the wall of his office (along with U.S. and British posters). Does that make him a Nazi?
Honestly, I think this entire thread is silly.

The great thing about a long long thread like this is how people come in at the end without bothering to read the thread (and can you blame them?) and make the same points that were made a few dozen times before waaaaaay upthread. Because that way someone can come in and make the same counterpoints that were made in the earlier posts, and so on, and the thread can live forever.

Very true, LarryC.
Ok, devoiko, fed-farmer and two cents - I'm guessing you don't have time to read the entire thread, but just think about it, it should stand to reason that in a thread this long someone must have made these points you're making (several times over, actually).
But on Larry's point maybe it's a useful thing to have eternal threads that just keep spinning in circles, e.g. on the job search questions. That way there'd be no need for the search function. If we keep stuff going round and round like a conveyor belt then whenever new people sign in the thread will still be live.

Untenured, Prof_mom and CrazybatLady reburied it. Gennidad brought in concrete to seal its tomb. P3 sang over it to give it rest.
Listen, folks. Killing a zombie requires a head shot. If I learned nothing else from George Romero, I learned that.

Resurrected again? Oh, crap! This always happens when we try to take a short cut. Will a handgun work, or does it have to be a certain type of gun? I'm not much for zombie movies, but I would like to help bury this thread properly if I may. I don't want to be bossy like some people.

If you have a rifle, 30 caliber is adequate. Make sure you stand at least twenty feet away. You don't want to experience zombie blowback. a

Yeaah, I read it. I read about the zombies. I've enjoyed the whole thing. 12 pages now. I know how the Confederate battle flag can be offensive to many. Most. Me. I know what goes through my mind when I see one flying in front of a house. But I'm really curious about the people who do fly it. What do they mean by it? Maybe not what I think. But I'm not in the "asking people about themselves and their group relationships" business. At least a few people here are. Maybe they have interviewed a population of Johnny Rebs- or they have read the scholarly papers about them. Maybe some graduate student needs a project.
Now having an argument about a colleague's behavior without involving the person in question, sheesh. I hate it when people talk about me behind my back and don't have the decency to confront me head on. That's like reporting your neighbor for violating the "no toys shall be left in the front lawn" rule.

but would the same people ban a communist Lenin flag, as many people buy when travelling to former communist coutries as souvenirs? And should it be forbidden for student to wear che guevara T-shirts? (sure he is responsible for the deaths of a quite a few)
