How reputable is the SUNY system across the country, as it pertains to both students and to those who work for SUNY. I have been told that working profesionally for a SUNY institution is highly desired and highly marketable to future employers. Can anyone offer some input? What is the general perception of SUNY from the average outsider? Thanks!

I think SUNY-Albany or SUNY overall is on the censored list of the AAUP.

I think this question has been cross-posted. Better to just post once and let all the responses be received in one place.

You are among the Pure and Truthful, however small their Number.
My goodness, that was an exceptionally good analysis of the forum.

Academically speaking, the quality of the programs in my field varies a great deal from location to location in the SUNY system.
I used to teach at a SLAC in a neighboring state, and I always heard we got an increasing number of our students from NY because the SUNY system was not doing well financially.

BTW: the AAUP has a censured list ... not censored... (channelling my inner pedant) :)

I was told that their pay scales suck and that their CUNY counterparts get paid much more money.

Maybe, but a dollar can go quite a bit further in rural Upstate New York than in New York City.

Although New York does not have a flagship state university like Michigan or Virginia, SUNY's rep is strong. But you should know that there is a wide range of institutions, 64 campuses, in the SUNY system and they can vary a lot. The four research centers (Binghamton, Albany, Buffalo, and Stonybrook) enjoy the strongest reputations. SUNY-Geneseo is the SLAC of the system and it is very good too. Other campuses, such as Potsdam, Cortland, and Morrisville offer different things, and arguably with lower overall quality, than these first five.
The pay scale at the four research centers tends to be higher than the other campuses. And yes, your dollar will go a long way in upstate NY, depending on the city. Oneonta is cheaper to live in than Buffalo, for example. But even in the small towns and cities that host some SUNYs there are costs -- like property taxes -- that are quite high.
FYI, there is a good union, the United University Professionals, operating on the SUNY campuses.
Good luck!
